This is my PreviewApps.dat
GOM Player=C:\Program Files\GomPlayer\GOM.exe
MPlayerC=C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Media Player Classic\mplayerc.exe
...

eMule (and many more applications) have trouble when file- or path names contains spaces.
Try putting quotes on each side

My PreviewApps.dat works, looking like this:
VideoLan="C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"
MediaPlayerClassic="C:\Program Files\MediaPlayerClassic\mplayerc.exe"
IrfanView="C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe"
Notepad="C:\WinNT\Notepad.exe"
Hope this helps

Btw; can anyone recommend a good text/hex viewer that doesn't load
the whole file into memory (see first post on the thread).

Ultraedit says that they don't load files completely into memory, and you have a trial period to test it, but you should really never have to pay for a hex editor if all you're going to use it for is to identify the header information of the file. Also, why don't you want it to load the whole file into memory? Not enough RAM?

Cheers,
DEBob

PS - Hexedit 2.0 (the free version, 3.6 is newest and costs like 40$), can do it also. I have 2.0 and opened a ~1.5GB iso; the mem usage stayed at ~12MB, and scrolling never caused it to freeze up while seeking another part of the file.

What is going on?
http://www.edkfakes.info are down, http://donkeyfakes.net are down too and the http://bitzi.com thing is pretty much useless, as the last thing I want is to install some of their software on my system(s)...

Damn! :ranting: :furious:

Where to report fakes and does that mean that the fakes I reported yesterday at http://donkeyfakes.n...ort.php?lang=en are gone too?! :ranting:

Bitzi's database may not have the answer for every query you put to it, but if you look through it, it has plenty of data on files both good and bad, and people use it. What Bitzi installs is harmless, isn't a resource hog, doesn't start with Windows, and isn't a background process in hiding... Bitzi is the only online database that I know of which has been running for the past 3 years and hasn't stopped serving the community (this is not said to denigrate those that have left). So for all of the slagging it takes, it is both viable and worthwhile to use it. I bet in 5 years from now, it will still be here working for us, so why avoid it? The more we use it, the better it becomes.

A number of the fake check servers have come and gone, but while they were here, they all provided a valuable service. One is now being operated at ((URL Removed - No Longer In Service)) . To use it, paste the following code into your webservices.dat file.

Where to get a good hex/text editor?
I use TotalCommander http://www.ghisler.com (similar to the good old Norton Commander), it's Viewer (F3) doesn't load the whole file.

Hello all, please excuse my ignorance, but is quote underneath still valid and can we still use it, or are there new addresses to paste into web services to check for fakes?

[After doing a search, you can check a file immediately by using webservices. Go to Options/General/Edit Web Services... and paste in the following lines:
ZITAT
OUT OF ORDER Donkeyserver No1,http://62.241.53.2/cgi-bin/ed2khistory?ed2k=#hashid
Stats tothbenedek,http://tothbenedek.hu/ed2kstats/ed2k?hash=#hashid

They are all working, except the Donkeyserver No 1 link which does not exist.

Edit: Donkeyfakes.net is back - Read about it here. If you visit the site, it should be pretty self-explanatory how it can be used for checking and submitting fakes. Instructions for adding it to eMule's webservices are on the first page of this thread.

I think that there's a easier way to detect if a file is a fake when the webservices don't help at all, is to download the first chunk of the file then analyze its contents/header with the "file" command

example:

file F:\Program Files\eMule\Temp\0xx.part

this only works to check if the file being downloaded is the right kind of file like .avi .rar, .zip etc but this says nothing about what kind of stuff it contains

You mean the *nix file command that isn't included with Windows, the only platform that eMule runs on natively? Yeah, that's what I thought...

Don't know if anyone is going to see this as the topic's so old, but

http://gnuwin32.sour...ckages/file.htm

might help. It's a port of the 'nix file facility.

To get it to work on the command line under 'doze, download the setup file from sourceforge, execute it and then go to a dos command and type

echo c:\progra~1\gnuwin32\bin\file %* > \%windir%\file.bat

to create a bat file on your 'path' so it will run from where ever you are in the filing system. ie you 'cd' your way to the directory of the unknown file and type file unkownfile.ext or, alternativel type file Drive:\Full\PathName\filename.ext from anywhere. Either way it will attempt to identify the filetype.

Cheers

Javed

PS, dunno if it's just some peculiarity about my OS/application installation (years of tinkering, sellotape, string and several invocations) but I couldn't persuade this forum to accept my login under Opera. Yes, I have cookies etc enabled and yes it works everywhere else. I've had to resort to internet-exterminator :-(

Peerates line should actually be:
Peerates,http://edk.peerates.net/check.php?p=#hashid

Also, http://donkeyfakes.net/ is closed and http://www.edkfakes.info/ seems to be down.

What or where is "WEBSERVICES" please? I have recently had the same problem with Zip & RAR files that contain nothing but an executable program "setup.exe" that I wouldn't un-zip for anything because it has to be a virus and not a picture or a video. I read the reply to this and I got a headache just TRYING to read & understand the "answer". In fact as is obvious I couldn't get past the 1st sentence that says something about a place or thing called, "Webservices".

After doing a search, you can check a file immediately by using webservices. Go to Options/General/Edit Web Services... (it creates and opens the file webservices.dat and you can find it into config folder, after its creation) and paste in the following lines....

And you can find the same button into tools - links - edit webservices...

After you have filled this file with those commands (and saved it), you will have a new button after right-clicking a file into transfers list (or tab), search list, shared file list.

The first protection against spam files is to have a clean serverlist (if you are using server, global(server) or automatic methods for your searches) or, if you are using kad network for your searches, put 229kb into the min. size field.
