If you are new to eMule you should use the official client and not any of the mods. You should also use the installer and not the binaries when you update. If you have worked with eMule before you should choose wether you are more comfortable with the installer or the binaries. Also have a look at all the great mods out there!
Follow the instructions below to install or update your eMule depending on your use of installer or binaries. When updating eMule please backup you entire eMule folder or atleast the config folder. The most important files is cryptkey.dat, preferences.dat and clients.met!

Installation of eMule using the installer: [For novices]
Here you can see the official page on installation. Follow the steps below:
  • Download the installer from the official download page.
  • Run the .exe file.
  • Follow the instructions in the installer and complete the installation.
  • Run eMule and follow the instructions in the wizard when it appears.
  • eMule is now ready for use. Enjoy! :D
Updating eMule using the installer: [For novices]
Here you can see the official page on updating. The installer will only overwrite the .exe file and all your credits and downloads will NOT be lost. Do not uninstall the previous version since important files will be lost! Follow the steps below:
  • Download the installer from the official download page.
  • Run the .exe file.
  • Ensure that the installation destination is the folder of the current eMule installation
  • Follow the instructions in the installer and complete the installation.
  • Run eMule and cancel wizard when it appears.
  • The new version of eMule is now ready for use. Enjoy! :D
Installation of eMule using the binaries: [For experienced users]
Here you can see the official page on installation. Follow the steps below:
  • Download the binaries from the official download page.
  • Unzip or unrar the archive to some destination on your harddrive.
  • Place the folder containing all the eMule files in the directory you wish to run eMule from.
  • Run eMule.
  • Follow the wizard which will appear.
  • eMule is now ready for use. Enjoy! :D
Updating eMule using the binaries: [For experienced users]
Here you can see the official page on updating. There are two ways of updating eMule. Choose your approach:

Preferred way:
Any new files included in the program should be generated by eMule if they are missing in the folder where eMule is located. Follow the steps below:
  • Backup the entire eMule folder of your current installation. This is really important!
  • Download the binaries from the official download page.
  • Unzip or unrar the archive to some destination on your harddrive.
  • Take the .exe file from the archive you just unzipped/unrarred and overwrite the .exe file in the directory of your current installation.
  • Run eMule.
  • Cancel the wizard which will appear.
  • The new version of eMule is now ready for use. Enjoy! :D
More complicated way:
This involves overwriting more files. Look here for at description of the files used by eMule. Follow the steps below:
  • Backup the entire eMule folder of your current installation. This is really important!
  • Download the binaries from the official download page.
  • Unzip or unrar the archive to the destination on your harddrive you want to run eMule from.
  • In order to keep credits, known clients, settings and more you have to overwrite som files.
  • Copy all the important files mentioned below if they exist in your old installation folder and overwrite the files in the new folder you have placed eMule.
  • Run eMule.
  • Cancel the wizard which will appear.
  • In eMule settings point to the correct temp folder and incoming folder to continue existing downloads.
  • The new version of eMule is now ready for use. Enjoy! :D
  • Below is the important files you should overwrite if they exist in your old installation folder:
    • Adresses.dat
    • Category.ini
    • Clients.met,
    • Clients.met.bak
    • Cryptkey.dat
    • Emfriends.met
    • Ipfilter.dat
    • Known.met
    • Known2.met
    • Preference.dat
    • Preferences.ini
    • Server.met
    • Sharedir.dat
    • Statistics.ini

If you have any questions regarding what I wrote please make a post on this thread and if you have any comments please post on this thread or PM me. Happy muling to everyone... :punk:

Hi!

Is there a way for transfering emule with all settings and credits to a new computer? I've tried everything without success, and now I wonder if it can't be done cos credits are encrypted for one and only one computer!

Is that right?

Cheers!!

You just need to install a new eMule (zip or installer) and put in the new eMule/Config directory your old files

edit: Cryptkey.dat and Preference.dat store your userhash which identifies users (not computers)

If you don't wish to instal eMule again then just the entire eMule folder to the new computer and voila... :)

How do you know that your credit file was deleted? No servers found anymore? :)

I was wondering..

I have eMule 0.42e .. and if I want to upgrade, do I have to upgrade first to 0.42f in order to get those updates? .. or can I just upgrade right away to 0.42g with all the updates of 0.42f included?

Versions are always based on the previous version so just install the latest version no matter which one you used previously. :)

Hi there.:)

I forgot to cancel the wizard and I did not back up my folder before I installed the new version. However it did not ask me if I wanted to overwirte anything and all my downloads were still going fine once I started .44b. I had .43b. I checked the cryptkey file and it hasnt been modified in over 3 months, does that mean that everything is okay?

Thanks for the help!

J

PS If someone can point to a good link for the best emule settings for XP SP1 that would be great!:)

If you are only interested in the your own access to your credits then you neew to copy over the cryptkey.dat file and the preferences.dat file. If you are interested in keeping other peoples credits with you then you also need the clients.met file. :)

* Cryptkey.dat
* Emfriends.met
* Known.met
* Preference.dat
* Server.met

and del
* Preferences.ini

Yes, a new preferences.ini file will be created at next startup, and you'll have to go through the wizard again; that's safe.

I reinstalled my OS and have copied all files listed in this thread over, but emule does not read my old statistics. What file controlls this. I have about 100Gb up and down on there and it is just somthing interesting to watch.

Depending on your version of eMule either preferences.ini or statistics.ini. :)

I am trying to unzip binaries I downloaded into my emule dir and it is asking me for a password to replace emule.exe!

Since this is probably the one that matters most and it is not my password, nor is it admin nor blank I am lost?

Anyone know why/what is going on here?

[EDIT] Managed to copy the file individually... so sorted it I think... still no idea what caused this though! [/EDIT]

i was using win98se but i switched to xp pro. i downloaded 0.44 but when i double clicked on .exe file a "C:/.../emule...exe NTVDM CPU encountered an invalid command. Cs:06f6 IP:0119 OP:65 63 74 20 61. Choose close to quit the application" message with a title "16-bit MS-DOS subsystem" appears. It's not 100% like this since my OS is not english but it's something like this.

I think your installer is corrupt. Download it again and make sure you don't use any download manager. :)
