It seems the new webpage may be finishing up (For real this time). Therefore someone helped me create a content page to go with the new homepage..

I'm wanting something like Tucows, Download.com, Sourceforge or even something like some well known ED2K link sites.

The page basically would be a resource to any content that can be freely distributed.

* Freeware/Shareware/OpenSource Games. (Programmer wanting a user base?)
* Freeware/Shareware/OpenSource Software. (Programmer wanting an user base?)
* Public domain music. (A artist wanting to get noticed?)
* Public domain multimedia. (A producer wanting to get noticed?)
* Patches to software and games.
* Anything else that would be wanted.

We would most likely need some people that would help scout for content to put on it. Hopefully some well known site would use it to distribute there product also.

P2P has been getting a bad rap for a long time. It's time to start giving P2P a better name with some real content.

I had two people (-Mac- and Intimidated) that wanted to create this content site and I thank both of you..

The only way this will work is if the users get involved.. I hope this does happen..

There are two level of users we are looking for.. Releasers and Moderators.. Basically a releaser is someone that publishes content periodically.. A moderator will be someone that checks to make sure the content is legal and may be someone that does a lot of releasing themself..

Here's a preview of the site.. There may be bugs and all, so be patient.

I don't like to critisize, but if you want to have a site like Tucows, you must have more Categories, like:

Operating System
Internet
Multimedia
System
Utilities
Themes

I don't know if it's possible to have main categories as in the Tucows homepage, for example:

Windows
Macintosh
Linux
e.t.c.

First, why would you want so many catagories when there are almost no files at to moment?

You can mark each files for different OS which means future development could happen..

And a catagory modual is being worked on..

I think adding Blender (www.blender3d.org) would be great.
Blender is a 3d modeling program and available on about all platforms.

In my opinion, adding ed2k-links to content that is available over http doesn't make much sense: Why would I download something with emule if I can just go to the programs homepage and download it from their servers?

It only makes sense to add free content that isn't available anywhere else or otherwise hard to get.

There are a lot of people downloading a program like that. All that downloading costs a lot of bandwith. If only hard to get things should be there, then why's America's Army?

servers can be down...

However, the main goal is to get the service attractive to some people. I agree it doesn't have much sense in just spreading well known freeware - it's about finding some new content for the network and for the benefit of those who can't achive webspace for whatever reason.

Reread my post.

The whole point of the site is to give people an audience they most likely wouldn't have had..

Also, it's a way for people to distribute their files without even needing a host..

And I specifically said that the site will only be successful if the users themselves get involved..

I only put a few things on there just so some could get an idea of what a basic release would look like..

@ Shareoholik

I change that post to point to here.. People can start to give each other ideas and such.. You should be able to submit releases as a normal user.. They only need to be verified before it is visiable.. After some time the user will become a releaser or moderator..

Site looks promising IMHO. The real challenge however is not to fill up the site with relevant content, it is keeping the links up-to-date and working. If there are thousands of links, it is going to take some seriously dedicated people to update the links with new file versions, and keep them well spread. Big sites like Tucows manage this because the content is provided by those who develop it. The Emule site can only partially hope for this I think.

One way to keep the site healthy is by limiting the number of files to what the moderators/releasers can monitor on a regular basis. Maybe links should default to die and be removed after a few months, as an additional step to keep the contents healthy and relevant.

What we don't need is a bloated db of links which are a)dead or b)outdated versions.

Yeah your right.. :) Like I said before.. This is a test run.... And I think I did tell the programmer I didn't want regular users to post new releases..

We wll slowly figure a way to do this so it's easier... Try now..

I was realy in a happyness, i thought i could release my hiphopremixes(self made of cours with turntables) schnüff

But when the site is out of the testing phase, we see the things that will come

keep up the good work :+1:

-->edit

what can we do to help the testing

It could be possible for a report function for users to report dead links or new updates for the program.

Added a few releases, just waiting to become a verified member :)

Doing so has raised a question for me on what is ok to distribute and what is not? Two of my links are for Windows 2000 SP4 & XP SP1. They're freely available from Microsofts website (at <10k/s when I got them!!) - but does that mean they're ok to redistribute? :S

I think that it won't be ok with Microsoft.

First of all it is a great idea to provide older microsoft updates and patches over p2p, at least for anything not available through windows upate anymore.

Yeah microsoft would probably through a tantrum over it though, so while it may be a great idea I wouldn't recommend actually do it.

Based on the sites preview, I would say that it is going to be a really cool and useful website.

Maybe it could have a seperate section for older content that is still available on ed2k as well. In addition to having being able to get content from download.com and other shareware/freeware websites, it would be cool to mirror thier content onto an p2p network like ed2k and have a website that users can search through and download that content from. This would be useful because as it has been posted before, servers go down, they can be busy overworked and very slow.

So while providing listings to showcase new content is really useful and cool, providing such service for older content as well is also a good idea.
Ed2k, emule and bittorrent are dying and under attack. Which 3rd generation client and network will you upgrade to?

Antsp2p
I2p

A very simple way is Google Adsense
http://www.google.com/services/

It is widely used and very successful, easy to implement with no investment.
