Due to the overbearing amount of spam, new topics and replies with links inside are from now on blocked.

Right now that applies to all posts and users, but it will be fine tuned to only affect "suspicious" users, like those without a certain amount of posts, registered within the last few months, suspicious mails and IPs and so on. However if you see a message that "You do not have permission to carry out that function." when posting, it means that your post is blocked by this anti-spam measure. Just remove the link (and the spam :) ) from your post and you'll be able to post.

Sorry for the inconvenience but unfortuantely there aren't any better options avaialble.

I've just noticed about it. I was going to ask if it was just me. I understand the reasons behind that decision because spam is getting annoying in the forum. I hope it will be tuned soon. Thanks for the update and Happy New Year to everyone!

Thank you very much for the notice and for the maintenance of the website! I fully understand the headache fighting against spams - my website used to have tens or hundreds of thousands of spam comments and registered users for spamming purpose in several months. But as a user, may I post just a little complaint here: I returned to the forum 9 years after my last login in 2011, because I wanted to report some issues (eventually posted here) of the community version. And I was unable to post it and saw "You do not have permission to carry out that function." I was confused and thought I was blocked or the forum had a bug or something. Then I found I was able to post in other discussion board. So I thought maybe "Public Beta Tests" board was limited to developers or something (but I could find new users' posts in "Public Beta Tests" board ?!? It was like ... really confusing). Then "You do not have permission to carry out that function" reappeared when I was posting another long reply (eventually posted here). Extremely confused, I performed a Google search of "site:forum.emule-project.net You do not have permission to carry out that function." to finally found this topic and understood what was going on.

WordPress officially maintains "Akismet Anti-Spam" plugin which works pretty well. IPB is actively maintained, don't they have better anti-spam method / plugin or something? Also, consider whitelisting some image websites - users can't upload an image directly and have to use an image website such as imgbb that I'm using, if their URL are blocked, it essentially means users are completely unable to post images here. Whitelist some eMule related websites as well, including www.emule-mods.de , ed2k.shortypower.org , www.emule-security.org , wiki.emule-web.de , emulefans.com (eMule Fans was created by me in 2009 and is perhaps the only eMule-related (not illegal downloading but similar to emule-mods.de) Chinese language website that exists today, albeit not very active. Led by Uralhan, eMule official documentation (guide) was translated into Simplified Chinese by eMuleFans editors Ejack, Uralhan and 4 other editors/users in 2010 and first published on eMuleFans then copied to emule-project.net).

A small update in the never ending war against spam and bots:

- All profile comments have been disabled by default, if you do want to use them for your profile you can reenable them in your settings.
- Links in new personal messages are now forbidden too unfortunately (due to spam bots, flooding members with spam PMs)
- The error messages have been adjusted, to make the reason for rejecting the PMs/Posts clear

I suggest to disable a site link in a profile as well. If you take a look at newly registered members
you see a lot of bots with their spam site links in profiles joining daily.

Yes this is an issue - registrations. So i also suggest to add anti spam questions
(strong enough but solvable for non native English speakers as well) and rotate it on registration page
and maybe add some plugin (i know stopforumspam) to check usernames, emails with some database,
i would not check ip because possible false positive triggers (shared ip, vpn ip).

Clean up forum membership is good idea too because there are a lot of bots that has been joining here for years.
Check all members usernames, mails with anti spam database and
delete bots with zero posts, delete not ban because there always could be false positives.

Updated and Legit Emule Server Lists are available here:
www.emule-security.org/ and shortypower.org
You can also enable options for updating server list from a connected server and clients
