When eMule is running, I have trouble using web applications such as Firefox. Of course eMule is using a lot of resources, but I'd like to be able to do other things as well. It's not about being unable to stream 4K movies, but even text dominated sites like Wikipedia take forever to download and way too often fail to load and have to be reloaded. I've tried scaling back upload and download limits but it doesn't seem to help. I'm using v0.50a. I have a cheap/slow connection that doesn't stream well so I tend to download everything and watch it later. Because I keep turning eMule off, I also keep forgetting to turn it back on and lose all that overnight download time.

Dude, you need to set eMule limits for both upload and download, according to your connection capacity.

Run this speed test: https://www.speedtest.net/
Then tell us the results.
Use the results -20% for the limits in eMule.

I also recommend you to set upload speed in eMule at 50% of your current one (do the speed test without any networking software running, i.e. without eMule/torrents running), but you can make it up to 20% if your max up speed is very low.
It is also very helpful, if your internet is not very fast, to use cFosSpeed (www.cfos.de). I've had the same problem (I usually just buy the cheaper ADSL offer because my pc is on 24/7 and I don't have any hurry) and it "saved my life".
You can try it for 14 days (as far as I remember), and when they have it on sale it can get very cheap (I think I purchased it for 9.90€, lifetime license). I'm actually even able to play games online with eMule running (if it's not downloading anything in that moment and only uploading).
It could be something else, though, like if it's downloading a lot, your cpu and hdd usage can get much higher and make other software run slower for that reason.
