Hi all...

As per title, I've had eMule going for at least 14 years and through 4 rebuilds of my PC with absolutely no issues that I wasn't able to fix. Just today, after an automatic Windows update (always on) it immediately crashes upon startup with the usual Windows dialog and problem signature:
(Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: emule.exe
Application Version: 0.50.0.4
Application Timestamp: 4bbc81c8
Fault Module Name: emule.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.50.0.4
Fault Module Timestamp: 4bbc81c8
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00054924
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 3081
Additional Information 1: 1ebb
Additional Information 2: 1ebbad11949a3f278b14208a4ec2ae05
Additional Information 3: 78dc
Additional Information 4: 78dcc106d9cdf3be3f9d3253b696d360

I've read the (very old) posting rules before posting but can't give much of the required eMule settings due to non startup; I can only give details of the PC and memory of settings as follows:
Pc Configuration
- Operating System Win 7 Ultimate, running as Admin.
- Internet connection type ADSL
- Modem, Router, Proxy Telstra Gateway Max
- Firewalls Windows, eMule allowed
- Antivirus AVG (temporarily uninstalled, not just disabled)
- Spyware detector MalwareBytes (temporarily uninstalled, not just disabled)
- Emule Version 50A
TCP & UDP Ports opened on router with full permissions. Always High ID. Configured to a limited number of trusted servers, about 20.

I'm a regular sharer on eMule and have an U/L:D/L ratio of about 3.5 : 1. (I usually let it run 24/7, although I d/l little these days)

Tried a reinstall over-the-top, same result.

I really don't want to uninstall and do a fresh install for fear of losing my stats and settings... it was a LONG time ago that I learnt how to set up and my memory is a bit hazy as I approach 60!

Can anyone help?

Download emule 0.50a (or 0.51b community) binaries (from sourceforge.net)
Decompress it and put the emule folder wherever you desire (possibly not in c:\program files)
Open the new emule and choose to store config and downloads in the program directory (options extended)
Close the new emule
Move the older config files in the new config folder WITHOUT the preferences.ini.
Open the new emule: still no crashes? Modify the options folders to use the previous incoming and temporary folders (or move the older files in the new directories, with emule closed).
INCONCEIVABLE! - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Hi, thanks for your input.

Finally got back to this problem after abandonment for a time...

Did exactly as per your instructions, but same result on the new eMule folder (in a different directory and drive) unfortunately. When trying to open emule old or new, the crash happens immediately without delay, if that gives any clue.

Should I go for 0.51b? I won't go ahead unless I get the nod that it's safe...

There is no risk trying 0.51b from our website, although it seems not that likely that is olves your problem (which is most likely caused by some software incompability)

Not clear, at what step you failed.

Location of config is controlled with a registry setting; this page tells where to look for the folder.
Note: (Vista Only) should be read as (Vista and above).

Try to rename the config directory to config1; that would be a backup copy also.
Then start eMule; it should execute first run wizard and recreate config directory.
If not, than most probably there were issues with Windows.

eMule could crash on startup when some of its configuration files were corrupt.
For example, long ago I had crashes because of bad known*.met files.
That bad file found by moving/renaming .met files in config, one by one.
