I'm starting a port of eMule to the Universal Windows Platform so I can run it on my Windows Mobile phone. As soon as the first working version is ready I'll publish the app in the Windows Store. The source code will be available here https://github.com/a...torivelli/eMule. My question is can I use the eMule name for the app or is it trademarked?

Regards

Alberto

You can (the name is trademarked in some countries by us but that's not a problem). You do need to make sure that you are abiding the GPL however and it's conditions. Which for example means showing the licenese conditions to the user and offering him to download the source code. All which I'd is compatible with the Windows Store.

Aside from the legal terms, it would be very helpful if the users realizes immediately that the version you offer does not come from this site (so is not the "official version") as they should know that it is someone else they have to trust for using this executable and also important will not comhe here to complain/try to get support/look for admistrative contacts for your fork.

eMule for Android would be great too.

Existing code pretty well compiles for UWP target.
But you might need a lot to do making GUI for small touch screens.

Windows Mobile is defunct already.
Presumably you meant Windows Phone platform. :)

The name is not really a problem, I've already reserved Kad as an alternative. Of course there will be links to source code, license, privacy and support page like on this one https://www.microsof...ta/9nblggh52t2r

How can I do that? The only way is to change the name. But I really would like to keep the name of this great classic application.

I really hope but I'm not so sure: usually file I/O needs to be replaced. Winsock it's supported. Threads needs to be replaced with Tasks.
Making the GUI is actually the easy part. I already made "a new shell" for the Password Safe project but I had to replace some MFC and standard library code (i.e. File I/O). Luckily the eMule source code is well written, that can speed up the process.
My initial intent is to get to work Kad, Search and Transfer. eDonkey will not be included is obsolete.

I just resumed my work on the eMule uwp port, I have one entire week to work on it hopefully I could complete something and release it.

I can't find the sources for the eMule setup, I'd need the untouched preferencesKad.dat copied by the setup.

Someone can point me to the right direction?

Thanks

The file is created by eMule itself.

Yes, if it can't find that file it uses default values and then writes them to file...but maybe I could need the setup sources later on...

BTW After studying the source code I realized it was too much MFC dependent and decided to rewrite it in C# which is a modern language and will make the sources at least 50% shorter. I will publish some code before the beginning of the next week.
