I was wondering in any of the file search functions if there is a way to search for files based upon the criteria that it is a new release.

No, but with local/global(server) you can do generic searches and clicking the more button you could have up to about 1800 results; for example, if you are searching something that is neither video nor audio nor cd image (some of these types is returned however...):
