There's plenty of biggest/most discussion. This is for something a little more useful to comparing and testing eMule and its many mods and even other ED2K clients. Bragging rights to the eMule mod that gets rare files and the faster the better. So this isn't mistaken as me trying to get a file I want, I'm not going to suggest any rare files.

Per Murphy's ED2K Laws, there can only be one complete source and no one begs the complete source to be added as a friend or messages them in any way. Also, if I see anyone other than the complete source with > 49% of the file complete, I'll disqualify it. That's just an unfair jumpstart, especially on bigger files.

So this is useful, the file should have been in your Downloads for a while and be more than 50MB, less than 350MB, and not a program or other file that can contain and initiate code running (to avoid anybody suggesting everyone DL an infected file). So videos, pictures, audio, text, maybe some source code, and archives of them.

Open to other suggestions to make this a workable contest. I might be willing to raise the size to around 700MB as long as this doesn't become just another size contest.

Otherwise, just paste an ED2K link as a reply. :bounce:

why not invest all this energy rather in learning some basics ?

this file != that file
this source != that source

And you can use posh huchi-kuchi tralalla clients as much as you like, it does not change a thing.
You are just as much dependant on the other side.

That's why these things called ed2k links with hashes were invented. :flowers: You and, sadly, Stulle - a "posh huchi-kuchi tralalla" developer - apparently might want to "invest all this energy rather in learning" that basic first.

James: You still forget one major aspect: time! If you download concurrently the clients will fight for download at the sources client to say it blunt. If you download one after another the source situation may vary dramatically. If you have any idea of designing tests you would be aware that reproducibility is one of the most important bits in the process. To do that you will have to use a controlled environment and this is not possible in the eD2k. So whatever you do and however you try to insult me, you will never get a valid test result. This makes you the idiot and me the successful developer. Now why don't you invest your time and do some read up on test design?

Oh right, you may have noticed, if you think insulting me rocks I will do just the same. I figure this is how you want to compensate for your inferior knowledge but hey, I like swearing so I don't mind! :)

Stulle, you made one good point. That by scientific standards, it's not an ideal test because of the lack of reproducibility. Everything else is just an active display of ignorance of the thing you're successfully developing for.

I DL'd a 6MB book today from 1 source on a dial-up-like connection somewhere in South America and no one else DL'n it. Want to guess which eMule mod I or the other user were using? I'll give you a hint. You don't develop either. :flowers:

Waits for Stulle to start swearing. :-k

No, coulche was basically just saying what I am saying. A file today is not necessarily the "same" file (source wise) like it is tomorrow. And a source is certainly not the same on a different day because it might have changed its shared files and other people are requesting download.

So yeah, 100% agreed:

You are just as much dependant on the other side.

So to sum it up, you proposed a useless test and have no understanding of the basics. Stop acting like you were cool, you are nothing but pitiful because you just keep loosing one argument after another.

To be honest - either I misunderstood the first post suggesting to compare download of any (different) rare files, or the orig. post was changed later in that respect.

Anyways, what Stulle says in above post (first part, as of at.12th of June 2010 :D ) is true.
---------------------
My eMule is one of those "single sources" for many of my shared files. (according to info in shared files)

About once a month I check them, sorting them by file request, accepted requests, priority and so on.
More often than not there is strange things going on.

Sharing a group of strongly related files that usually get like two new downloaders per week, just one of those files for unknown reasons may suddenly have become popular - well, up to several dozen new downloaders per week is "popular" compared to most of my other shared files.
So that file with it's old high UL-priority is suddenly using way more of my upload than I want it. I may then adjust priorities.
Later it may become unpoular again, I may adjust priorities again, one or two monthes later, or I may forget for a long time. :|

And also, sometimes I download a little, sometimes I download a lot, most times I do not d/l at all.

Most times it is just my #1 eMule (a Mod, BastarD), sometimes it is that one plus a secondary official eMule, (to remember / learn how things are done in official) and then of course I lower the UL in #1 eMule.

Downloaded rare files, when not so important to me (uploadwise) but no need to delete them, still enough space on the HD, when they have uploaded at least once or twice, I will then reduce their UL priority from auto(10x) to somewhere between 1x to 3x, depending on how much I like the file, or my mood.

Sometimes I d/l (http) from servers, usually my eMule UL is so high that I am restricted to about 120 kB/s in http d/l. So I may or may not reduce eMule's UL limit.

After that I may or may not forget to raise it again.

Sometimes I grant a friendslot, few times I even set a file on PS, sometimes even partfiles can go on PS (powershare).

so, for a plentitude of reasons, the situation is very dynamic, even with me as the only source, from my side alone.

And I don't even use a real credit system, which would make things even more complicated.
(Well, I do use FineCS, which affects UL of single-source large partfiles with a bunch of fellow downloaders, you know : 10 downloaders, all having the same parts...)

-----------------------------

But I wonder if in eMule development, was there things tested in simulations ?
I have no idea if it is possible to have a network simulation suitable to test this or that in ed2k or Kademlia without some supercomputer available.
Was (would be) it even necessary ?

10th edit : :ranting: I HATE this keyboard. Next month I hopefully can replace it and then I will enjoy making it friends with my 1-kg-hammer. damn!

well, i personally like to think off how things will behave in the network. what will be the effect. you will not get accurate results, for obvious reasons, but it helps me to make decisions. i think KAD was probably tested in small LAN environments and SiRoB tested some clients upload in a LAN environment. anyway, i doubt some real simulations have ever been run. real meaning reliable from a scientific approach and simulating all aspects.

I just completed a 19MB book that I found in search yesterday. It had shown no sources until just before it completed. Source connected today, file quickly completed, and Murphy's ED2K "laws" proven even less scientifically useful than a Stulle mod. BTW, the clients involved in these cases were also not BasTard. Maybe that will make it easier for Stulle to provide a testable client hypothesis.

Frankly, if you think I am suggesting either of my mods improve download you are absolutely mistaken and prove yet again, how little you understand. Modding is not about improving download - apart from ICS and one or another improvement, probably - but about giving the user a nicer sharing experience and improving the upload management. Finding more sources or receiving faster download is not on my lists of objective when modding!

Oh and I am not saying I am providing you with anything. Especially not a testable client hypothesis. You are acting on a "destroying is easier than creating" basis around my projects so I will do just the same with your propositions. Especially if I think the proposition is nonsense, like I do in this case!

You've clearly already started on this one (or someone with a similar name running the Xtreme 8.1 mod). Looks like you're about 75% complete, but there does appear to be only one source, so I'm going to start to DL out of curiosity and because so few have put up challenges.

The idea of this contest is to have everyone start at nearly the same time. A day or more lead and already having a nearly complete file breaks the rules. It's best if you find a file you feel like you don't really, really, really want to DL immediately and can live if the source disappears and you never get the file.

Anyway, feel free to message me if it happens again and we can message some more people and see if anyone is willing to put their mods to the test.

I've been downloading this file for months, I never get low enough in the queue.
I'll transfer you the 76% before I download anymore, I guarantee you. This should make it a fair test.

I was about to ask you about that. The user that shows as a complete source hasn't transferred anything to me. I've never shared any file with the user before. The user is also connected to a very suspect server. I'm trying a couple tricks to see if I get anything. If I don't, I'll be canceling the download (so no need to transfer me anything for now).
