That's what Kad was created for. The network will survive. Even if one of the search layers dies :P.
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Now you can pretend all is fine and dandy. (I might go along pretending too, just for the fun of it; but do not try to sell me on the great situation we have here re: the future of eD2k.)
Whatever you choose.

But the truth is that steady downward trend in the total number of real servers was noted long ago.
Servers are vulnerable to attacks (both software and legal) and are somewhat foreign in highly decentralized eMule's network.
You can hope for better, but ed2k network does not look immortal at all.

There could be a problem in the future. There is not one now. What is the use in going further with that discussion? There are an infinite number of things that could happen. And an infinite amount of time could be wasted worrying about them.

@pepe: Stop whining and take it as a man.

Interesting misogynist ad-hominem (you could try to throw in some homophobia, just for bonus points), but the point stands: are the eMule server options one a dead closed-source project, and the other an alfa-state closed-source one?

Now you can pretend all is fine and dandy. (I might go along pretending too, just for the fun of it; but do not try to sell me on the great situation we have here re: the future of eD2k.)

Yes, I now the existing eServer runs fine... for now. But it would only take one strike at blocking eD2k traffic to bring the whole network down. We could not react. Can't you see it?

Regards.

Yes, lugdunum is closed source and probably dead.
Yes, satan is closed source, alpha-state (errr....beta-state I'd say) and seems to be dead, too (SADLY).

BUT (read-my-lips): WE STILL HAVE KAD. WE DON'T NEED ANY SERVERS.

Try yourself: Use eMule Kad-Only...

You want a light mod with source-dropping, Powershare and WiZaRd's ClientAnalyzer ?
Try Spike2-Mod !

You rather want to stick to official eMule but don't want to miss all the new fixes and optimizations from the mods ?
Try OfFixed-Mod !

There still exists the very real problem of a massive installed base of crappy consumer routers out there that don't handle many UDP connections well. Usually the first thing router manufacturers skimp on is the memory and that means small connection tracking tables. When that overflows, the results are usually anything but elegant.
