With the UK footie season about to get started proper, I thought OT&W should have a topic where we (including you "furriners") can worship and berate our supported teams and players during the forthcoming season.

Yesterday saw ManU beat Chelsea in the FA Community Shield. I particularly liked a BBC photo caption when it went to penalties: "The Dutch stopper then saves from Frank Lampard...." (nothing new there then Frank eh?)

The match suggests not much change in English footie over the summer, ManU pwn, Chelsea are still crap, and the England strikers will never win a penalty shoot out even if the defending goalie was still in a pram, AND asleep.

Any predictions for the (winners of) Champions League and UEFA cup 2008?

LOL oh so true. I'm still rooting for ManU in the Premier League.

Living in Germany I obviously have a favourite team in the BL as well. I'm all routing for Werder Bremen. I hope that not buying so many players this year will turn out good for them. I'd hate them to get run over by Bayern Munich because their transfer policy sucked. They really should have expanded the squad. They have 3 contests to compete in and if they don't want to have another low at the end of the season like last season they really need to do a lot of player switching.

Regarding the EC I'm currently considering Germany to be the strongest team. But I guess that Italy will do fine because they always suck in the qualifications and then that Italian luck begins to show in the tournament. Can't really see any other real competitor for the title so far. England sucked big time so far. So did France. Portugal and Spain always play nice but winning a big tournament is not in them.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

The German season started this weekend with the first round in the DFB-Cup.
Very very boring results, most matches have been even more boring, the only exception being Hamburg - St.Pauli, the 'anarchist fans' club (fan-friendship with Liverpool) , who after many Years just managed to be "first-leaguers" again (german 2nd league) .
They kicked out the team from Bayer Leverkusen :D

Maybe in a match with the Netherlands ?

Me too, I feel sympathy for Werder Bremen.
I used to live there and Marco Bode still is my all time favourite player.
It's Screamin' Jay Hawkins and he's a Wild Man, so bug off!

Well I love their style of playing. And they are slowly getting into their own. Basically they are already one of the top 15 teams in Europe when they actually show their talent.

Ok - some underdogs

...that's where I was born, Borusse für immer...
Still my favourite team, even if close to bankruptcy and less positve news coverage in the past.

...that is where my wife comes from and my second home. 3rd division north in Germany, but they defeated a 2nd division team in the recent 1st round of the DFB-Pokal. If I'm not mistaken, the only 3rd div team which survived the 1st round... :respect:

//
As for UK teams: my heart beats for ManU - I have friends living there and was lucky enough to attend Dortmund vs ManU in 1997 at the Westfalenstadion - Dortmund won the Championsleaque after that against Turin (was there, too ;o) )

the new shirt looks disturbingly like a liverpool shirt, so please don't get the 2 teams confused. The new shirt has a red devils logo, and even red devils writing on it

I can't wait to hear from the copyright infringement lawsuit

But don't tell me about ugly shirts. Werder Bremen's colours are white and green - few years ago, with a new sponsor they started wearing green, white and orange shirts, shorts and socks. :ranting: They were voted first place in "most ugly outfit".
And ever since on werder-online.de small ads You constantly see people searching for "whatever merchandise (the old stuff)"

Well my local Colt is .45 and 60 years old, rather blue.

According to this week's Toronto Star television guide, the game that is universally known as "Football" is played in Australia. Under the heading of football, matches between Hawthorn and Brisbane, and Geelong and Some-Poor-Saps (taped) were available. All other game category headings required additional wording (CFL or NFL in brackets), or were referred to as Soccer.

It certainly has to be about the most fluid team sport going. The refs interrupt very little, the players are cognizant of the wonderful 50 yard (!!!) penalty (Can you imagine what that would be like in rugby?!), and its seems the players hate delays as much as the fans do.
