I wonder what would happen if someone decided to release an updated Morph MOD. Would there even be demand for such an odd thing?
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

iam still using it. in my opinion and experience the morph mod is the best emule mod.

of course iam interested in the other projects for a complete new ed2k program or combination with bittorrent too.

as a VPN user, i need the bind to interface option for example.

I would like a new version, even if 12.7 works fine.

Thanks in advance :) :flowers:

@Andu,
Oh, you're alive.
I see Stulle has been making some changes on sourceforge morph git for a while.
Not like old days but there are still eMule users. I don't see any bad point about relasing a new version.

Again, it's really nice to see some old guys here !

Saying that I'm here is maybe a bit of an overstatement. I don't really have the time anymore to invest. Not the way I did in the past.

But I still have some affinity to the project itself.

I was just interested if there was still life here and what the interest would be like for a new Morph client.

Since I only do project management and not coding you shouldn't expect anything to come of this thread.

Edit: I just wish that there was still a main development team that was willing to overhaul the client or network if developments on the internet made it sensible.

Ah... you blew my cover! :-D

Great to see you're still up and about! We need to keep in touch, once my work produces some results. In fact, I have been considering public beta at this time and age. Something Andu also suggested.

On a more serious note: Who is it you're calling old?

I guess you are referring (at least in part) to the issue you noted in your last email to me (which I did not answer because reasons! [or other stuff going on]). In fact, 0.50b did a lot to make use of asynchronous IO actions for reading upload file data as well as for sockets along with a threaded approach to reading files and creating packets from the results. So to that end, I assume official has gone in the right direction already.

I also had a bit of an exchange with fox88 and he appears to have a similar view on the most prominent obstacles ed2k clients face these days. Since I am really only starting at this point, I am nowhere near assisting in any such development work. However, let's see where things lead me.

So to those interested, here is my current road map:
  • Update libraries and revamp git repository to allow for easier updates of updated libraries in the future <-- done
  • Merge to 0.50b beta <-- nearing the end, still working to combine new async IO stuff with MorphXT features
  • Merge to 0.60a community
  • Work towards MorphXT release
  • Merge StulleMule to latest MorphXT code base

I might be starting tests on the 0.50b merge but I basically have not decided, yet. Besides, I got a brand new development in real life so I will need to spend some of my free time preparing for a meeting in like early to mid December. So really no promises on any timing.

I'm here if you need some help setting up Beta threads and so on.

Also as far as new features for the main clients go here is a suggestion I made in the feature request subforum regarding a request to share credits.

View PostAndu, on 09 November 2020 - 02:20 AM, said:

In the past this was also a technological challenge. I wonder if blockchains could resolve the technical issues we faced in the past. After all a distributed ledger is exactly what you want for this kind of system.

Technology obviously has advanced a lot since the main client had it's last update. I think in that time I moved from 6Mbit down and less than 1Mbit up to 100/40 Mbits up and down and am just waiting for FTTH to be available here. VPNs are way more common nowadays so at least looking into technological solutions for NAT/LowID setups would be great.

Sharing credits was always something that people wanted to do. I think there used to be huge tax on setting up such a setup. But with blockchain a solution was found and successfully deployed for cryptocurrency. Upload/Download ratios are nothing else but a virtual currency. I don't know what kind of overhead blockchains have but there probably are ways to mitigate that impact.

I think there is no lack of ideas to improve the network and the entire experience. It just needs dedicated developers with the interest, know how and time.

Oh my... Yeah, 0.69 would also have been blocked. But who knew we would make it this far in 2004...

I removed these checks. But truth be told: I disabled most of the common leecher checks long ago. There are just not enough clients in the network to saturate my upload so why even exclude those that might help in that regard (and possibly even upload, too).

For those fearsome enough to try for themselves: I pushed the merged code to Github and Sourceforge so you could get it there and compile it yourselves. There is still an issue for overlapped socket sending which makes me think there is something wrong with the data rate calculation. I'll investigate that some more before moving on.

I'm tiptoe-ing very gently here in case I upset something, but this is great encouragement that the 'older' developers are still hovering around, mothering their baby.
A sort of Lazarus/Phoenix thread, rising from the ages of antiquity.
I have to say that the product has stood the test of time very well, a real tribute to the original design and implementation.
It is also encouraging to see that some of the concepts that made the MorphXT mod so attractive have been rolled into the newer version of eMule as well, and they are re-converging.
I look forward to the robust release of the next version - may it stand the test of time and ravages of Windows changes for many more years.
Good work!

Alright, quick update: I guess I got the most prominent bugs fixed. However, there is still a myriad of compiler warnings, most of which I expect to be gone after merging up to 0.60a. Hence, I do not feel comfortable to just go public with an intermediary version. Nevertheless, I would very much welcome some additional feedback. Whoever feels like doing some underground beta alpha testing please send me a PM.

Regards,
Stulle

Should I setup a separate thread for Alpha feedback? Or would you prefer to receive feedback in PMs?

I guess we can keep it to PMs for the time being. If I change my mind I'll let you know. :-)

IMO, this is one of the biggest issue of eMule/system. I have never used NeoMule/David implented Nat Traversal; as far as i know to get advantage of feature, both uploader and downloader clients must have this feature. So, adding it only to morph wouldn't change anything that much i guess but it's better than nothing :). I wonder why official eMule still doesn't have it. Sad to see dropping active user count for years.

I love morph, it's the most stable and fulfilling emule client I found since my fairly new emule adventure. A new version would be fantastic.

But if it will be based on any of fox88's crappy builds, I won't use it. That guy has psychological problems, he makes enemies from people who only wanted to help his project and reported some bugs in a friendly way. That's not a name calling or personal attack at all, it's just an observation. He made me banned from here when all I did was to report a bug and pointing out his passive aggressive toxic behaviour.

Two different people including me reported an unicode problem that was clearly a bug of his new 0.60a code, he didn't want to accept it was his build's bug, then he started with his toxic passive aggressive childish "hey lol how im ignoring you see, get mad lol" behaviour. I can see he finally accepted it was his bug after other people started to report it as well much later. (post #109 by wddddd in his thread)
But I reported the same bug first day he released his beta for example and he ignored it in the most toxic way possible because he made me his enemy for no frikking reason when all I wanted to help, nothing else.

emulers, if those are your reasons, I will gladly not care. I have a long history of acting out like that (or worse) on this board, so well, fair enough. Anyhow, I am still in the process of merging to fox88's 0.60a build and I take extra care to validate each and every change he made. This is a painfully tedious process but then again, it helps me get a better feeling for the code after all this time.

Once that is done I'll merge the 0.60b (and possibly beyond) changes. Given my current speed and availability, it will be a while until then. But what are a couple of weeks in the light of a 8 years hiatus. :-D
