Hello everybody !

On the occasion of the end of the year 2012, peerates.net publishes statistics on the popularity of our favorite p2p network. These data are accessible via two web pages or our modus operandi is also described.

Evolution of the users number since 2007
Evolution by country since 2009

synthesis of the averages for the most representative countries for the last 3 years:

on these graphs, we can see that after being one of the most popular P2P networks, it is still used by about a million people every day. A P2P network that brings together permanently one million of connected users is still a highly effective network and if we considering that bit torrent is not really a network but rather a protocol, eDonkey is still the most important P2P network on the internet.

Among the notable facts, we note the proportion of users in China is now close to 50%, which seems to be a fairly accurate reflection of the reality of the internet apart of P2P. Together, Chineses, Spanish, Italians and French accounts for near of 75% of all users.

In France, the HADOPI law makes very interesting the reading of these statistics and it seems that since early 2011, there has been effectively an hadopi's effect for the french users : When we compare with a country like Spain which display an equivalent users volume at start of 2011, at the end of 2012 we see that the French are now twice as less many :

The statistics study also shows about 25% of users are still connected to faked servers, which seems to indicate that 1 users on 4 do not really know what he is doing with its client software ...

you can find more information about this on this page and this news and for any additional question, you can use your favorite mail client and the smtp protocol ...

hace a nice share !

Very interesting.
Thanks, Peerates!

Is this statistics based on servers only or KAD was used also?

Something obviously should be done in next emule version to stop this.
Updated and Legit Emule Server Lists are available here:
www.emule-security.org/ and shortypower.org
You can also enable options for updating server list from a connected server and clients
in order to have all currently available servers listed in your Emule software.

hi,
the modus operandi is described on this page :
http://edk.peerates....ographes.bc.php

our methodology to evaluate the network popularity is to listen the global searches from the clients which are connected to edonkey servers.

so, we can't know if these clients are using kad or not, from our point of view (server) and we can't do this with kad because of its DHT technology : with KAD, if you want to listen searching requests from the users, you have to take the 'control' of the keywords you want to survey, as kad node. this can't be done only artificially with some modified kad clients and this do not give other information than the number of kad clients which searching for a specific keyword in a period time. you can't see all client searches from all clients by this, but only the clients which has launched a searche about the surveyed keyword.

we think that the number of daily requests we are receiving (1,5 million of searches per day) from near 300 000 users is enough to give us a good idea of things for the whole network.

Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately, the description is in French. Google translator helps somewhat and the answer could be found, but
I think this point deserved to be mentioned here explicitly.

For a while it was advised by some people to use KAD-only configuration and now even a mod without server support exists. I wonder if anybody knows how many users now connect only to KAD netwok.

I think kad and SX are more effective than the edonkey protocol to find many IP sources for a content. But the servers are faster to provide one or a small number of sources IP that will start the KAD/SX request process, which allowing to the client to have much more sources IP. servers are more implicated to find content and in their indexation function, i think they still keep their interest.

after some tests, the kmule client seems a good tool which shows that it exist a futur by this way, but there is very few users which use it and it's very easy to cut off the edonkey module of the emule client.

anyway, the kad protocole can't be used alone, the most important part is the emule exhanges between clients and i think the better way for the futur is a group of protocols which can working together and could so give us some redondancy in network operations.

the problem with kad is that this technology doesn't allow to count the things easily, except when you targeting a specific content or a specific keyword. the servers side gives a global view which does not exists with kad ...

Well, if that happens... look at it from the bright side! :+1:

We wouldn't have to use the open sourced official client anymore and follow its stringent protocol. We could use whichever abusive, aggressive or spamming client we would possibly want.

We would all be part of a very big community and therefore able to decorate our usernames with awesome tags.

We would be helped by authorities with which files we could share and download to avoid all the present struggeling and confusion. And above all this the health of the network would be guaranteed by a big state.

Or.. we could just engage in self-immolation. :flowers:
