upon restart, eMule apparently couldn't find any usable servers with these links because now the entire server tab is blank
Where did you save the .met file to? If it was not the "config" subdirectory under the eMule program directory, it will not load properly. HTH.

"To make sure you don't have fake servers in your server list delete all servers in the "Servers" tab. Go to the "Server" section in the options screen and disable the "Update serverlist when connecting to a server" and "Update serverlist when a client connects" options. Set the number of failed retries to 10 and enable the "Auto-update serverlist at start up" option, click the "List..." button and in the text file that opens paste this link: http://ocbmaurice.no...server-best.met. Save the text file and close it."

My seerver list has about 300 entries. Do I have to delete them individually? I don't see any other way.
I also don't see any options screen. There is a preferences tab but it doesn't have any servers section.
Could you please guide me explicitly (baby steps) to where I need to go?

Thanks for your help. I am really anxious to protect my computer from malware.

The easiest way, right click on any server, select Remove all.

You can also follow How To Get A Reliable Server List & A Good IPFIlter

I updated the guide a bit. I now recommend using peerates.net server list, K-Lite as a codec pack and I added Blue Tack's IP filter as an option.

I've done everything in your post, and i'm still getting 90% fake files (some with virus')... :(

Just spent 3 days downloading an .iso, just to find it's yet another corrupt file. The Mule ain't what it used to be!

Cheers for the guide anyway mate. Still a lot of useful info there. ;)

Updated the guide a bit, now recommending using VLC to preview files instead of MPC. Also corrected some confusing sentences.
If something isn't clear please point it out to me.

Hi Nirrity! (thanks for the guide!)

Some suggestions:

  • [What is a “Fake” ?], i would add at the end: It could be fairer call it "renamed file".

  • [Setting Up eMule to Avoid Fake Files Spreaders.], i would add:
    [...]
Fake servers are servers that spread fake sources and false search results.
If you encounter search results with BOTH very high availability AND only 100% complete sources on each one (and there aren't other results with minor complete sources than 100%), those are definitely spam (read: commercial unwanted message): right click on them and select "Mark as Spam".
    [...]

  • [Avoiding Fakes in the Search Stage], I would remove the edits:
    [...]
Since eMule 0.47a you can see a "Ratings" icon next to some results. Read more about ratings here: Look at the bottom on the page.
Once the client finish searching expand the first result (if possible) by clicking the “+” mark and check the filenames. If most of the filenames are the file you were searching for, start downloading the file.
If you are connected to KAD you can also search for comments on the file you are about to download by right clicking it, selecting "Comments..." from the context menu and clicking the "Search KAD" button.[end here]

  • [Checking Comments and Filenames in the “Transfers” tab.], i would add to check also the content tab for archive preview

  • [Previewing Video Files.], i would add the link to the docs (preview multimedia files), remembering that it is not recommended (see option - files)

  • [Reporting Fake Files] paragraph:
    [...]
If you choose to do that remember to set the file upload priority to very low
    [...]

:flowers:

INCONCEIVABLE! - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
