Yes, you do need more than 10 (which is the system default) for programs like eMule and no, it isn't just a registry key. The limit is hardcoded into tcpip.sys, which needs to be binary patched.

Ok. Tnx for clearing up about hardcode. My mistake.

System default for x64? If not then you misunderstood the question.

Would you be kind enough to explain why you might need more than 10 half-open connections for Emule? I completely disagree. I have never seen the need. The only time I can imagine someone will require is if they have very fast connections and routers capable of handling large numbers of simultaneous connections.

Regardless of what you may, or may not believe, I know from experience with XP x86 that this patch DOES make a difference. Your original reply makes it obvious to me that you are not in any position to make judgements upon how effective this patch can be. XP x64 behaves in an identical fashion to XP x86 with regard to internal IP limits. I am running the release candidate for XP x64 SP2.

My question still remains (and is really directed at the author LvlLord), is there a 64 bit version of this patch?

Experience is often tainted by expectation. People say the patch helps and suddenly you see it working. All it really improves is the time in which you get your sources. Same applies if you switch from official to a mod. Everybody expects download speeds to rise and some even see improvements. That doesn't mean that it really makes a difference.

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

I base this solely on occasionally checking the value and never seeing it get as high as 9, regardless of number of DL's & all works fine. Simple as that. And I was only asking whether the limit was still the same under x64, which you have answered.

I guess I'll offer a rebuttal to that statement. I've been able to force it to rise to 50 at one point. But then again, I was running 1000+ downloads simultaneously ;) The WRT54GS is a beefy router!

Wahaha! Excellent. Well, that was exactly my point. For exceptional situations/routers and/or insane users!

Sorry for not dropping in earlier to reply but I'm not logged in very often here.

@Nissenice: Yes, you do. Sure, you can use the option to prevent problems but do you really want to slow down the eMule when it isn't neccessary?

@Andu: Since I'll soon have a Master degree in computer science you can expect that I know the OSI model and basic TCP/IP networking quite well. :)

I'm not running as many files as PacoBell, but I usually run eMule and Azureus parallel, together with Apache, MySQL and sometimes even a gameserver on top (Q3A, UT or PVPGN). All on one computer using a fast USR router on a 4mb/s internet connection.

Without patching the tcpip.sys I get swamped with 4226 Events.

I just checked my C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys file, and it has the following information:

Size: 359,808 bytes (size on disk: 360,448 bytes)
Date modified: Thursday, April 20, 2006, 3:51:50 AM
Version: 5.1.2600.2892 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.060420-0254)

It is obviously not the exact file version you are talking about. What can I do?

As Andu said nicely it all may be expectations. I have been using LvlLords patch for years convinced of its good, but I do admit that each time I have actually checked, XP had reset on it's own, so one might say: be happy with both.

I have exactly the same file (as should everyone with the latest updates) and it can be patched without any problems with LvlLord's patcher.

Get it here: http://www.lvllord.de/

Most likely - not.
But who would want to use Vista, anyway? Even if you disregard all the DRM restrictions, useless services eating up the resources, missing drivers, system instability and other disgusting things - I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole before all the security experts and hackers have sniffed around all those (unavoidable for Microsoft products) security holes for at least 6 to 12 months. :flowers:
Vista is for clueless people (cannon fodder)

It's YOUR opinion.
I didn't ask an opinion, I wanted only to know if this patch works with Windows Vista.

No one knows about other working-patches for Windows Vista?

To use the LVLORD patch you need to:
1. Have a patched Windows XP TCPIP.sys file and save it to ur usb drive or watever.
2. Boot ur Windows Vista, go to the TCPIP.sys file and modify it so that u can gain full access of the file.
3. Rename the TCPIP.sys to TCPIP.sys.bak(this is to backup the file in the same location)
4. Paste the patched Windows XP TCPIP.sys file at the same location where u modify ur Windows Vista TCPIP.sys file.
5. NO MORE EVENT 4226 WARNING!!and yet u get as many half-open connection as u wan in ur Windows XP!!

Also is see multiple reports about ics needing too much resources... did not see i myself...

after updates i always check to make sure, and i've never had it revert back to 9. i applied the patch once a year ago, and it's stayed ever since.
