errr.. yeah.. i was talking about the correct display of smilies in IRC window on emule under linux... *notes the thread* :flowers:

Well in eMule the "Show smileys" setting for IRC is rather obviously placed in the IRC options panel. I assume you found it, so are you implying that you have that box checked but the smileys still don't work?

You should file a bug on Wine Bugzilla, otherwise there'll probably never be a patch for this issue. :D

OK, now the UDP bug is fixed, fine.
But unfortunately my eMule always dies in less than a day due to the 384 MB RAM of the machine being exhausted and being killed by the out-of-memory-killer. I do not have swap on that machine but I guess it would also happen with swap, only later - I never seen eMule use more than 200 MB RAM when I ran it on Windows, even when it was running with many downloads for several days.

At startup it only uses about 10% RAM, after a few hours its already over 50%, seems like the memory usages always increases until it dies. It's running about 10-15 active downloads, but there are less than 1000 sources in total.
An interesting thing is: top says that he "VIRT" memory usage of eMule always is > 2600m. WTF?

Does anyone have the same problem?

Did you try to leave the Options dialog open? it seems to prevent abnormal CPU and memory consumption here (eMule Beba using 81 MB at the moment!)

Unfortunately I cannot try that because I am running wine/eMule with a virtual X-server (Xvfb), I am only accessing eMule through the webinterface from a remote machine. I do not want to run a full X-server on my router.

But I am using my own compile of eMule anyway, maybe I will modify the source so that it opens the dialog on startup. Still this would be a hack not a fix...

I'm using emule on my ubuntu dedicated server for several months. The server is a PIII 500 @ 256MB ram. I can't confirm the 100% cpu load. With about 30 downloads it stays on 40 - 50%. The big problem is the ram. After 5-6 days the memory usage is of 300 MB. So i need to reboot every 10 days.

Is open on wine bugzilla a bug for this?

Use the rightclick context menu to open a 'Find...' window,
as long as theres a second window open in emule the CPU% is greatly lowered..

my suggestion (for now, untill the bug is fixed..) is too make sure there is a 'Find...' window opened (or any other window) when you are leaving emule running for a long period.

Obviously you have to close the window to check your emule progress (soo CPU% will spike) but as long as you keep that second window open CPU usage is really low.

couple of tips to make the fonts display just like on windows, and also get the stats fonts vertical.

1) on debian systems i.e. ubuntu, install 'msttcorefonts'

# sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

2) obtain the tahoma.ttf font,
this really sorts out all the mest up fonts;

download a 'tahoma.ttf' (google)

place in home dir, then;

# sudo mkdir /usr/local/share/fonts/ttfonts
# sudo mv tahoma.ttf /usr/local/share/fonts/ttfonts

Can I translate this tutorial (to spanish) and post it into my blog? (of course, leaving the proper credits)

Why not translate to spanish and open a topic in Spanish general with translated tutorial?. So you can help spanish speakers of this forum and you can include a link to the spanish topic in your blog.

Cheers :D

Finally, today my vacations started, so I'll start with the translation. My knowledge about Linux is limited, so I will translate it textually xP. And will be posted in the spanish section ;).

gav616, is that a proper debianized wine package or just a .deb bundle ?

still pretty new to linux soo kind of don't 100% get what you meen, but i install all the dependencies to compile wine source, then used the guide on here to compile, then at the end used 'sudo checkinstall -D' instead of 'sudo make install' to create a .deb.

theres no system tray support for emule with wine yet, heres a temp solution;

install Alltray
sudo apt-get install alltray

create a file named 'anything.sh' in the emule.exe directory

edit the file so 'alltray' opens emule.exe and displays a nice icon i.e. Posted Image
#!/bin/sh
cd /storage/eMule
alltray --show -i emule.gif wine emule.exe

save, close and give it permission to execute
chmod +x whatever.sh

now run the '.sh' file from a menu;
Name: eMule
Command: /storage/eMule/runemule.sh

or run through terminal;
$ cd /storage/eMule/
$ sh runemule.sh

More info on alltray commands

example;

alltray + wine + emule is not working for me.
I created the .sh and ran it.
While emule is starting the emule icon appears in the gnome panel, but when it is completely loaded the icon dissapears.
If I click on the x to close the window emule asks if I really want to close it, if I say yes it will be closed. So it doesn't minimize to the gnome panel as expected.

Am I the only one with this problem? :unsure:

Thank you in advance.

The file preview feature doesn't work properly in wine + emule.
The filename is passed as Z:\bla\bla\bla\xxx.part and Ubuntu won't recognize it.

So I created a workaround that works for me (Ubuntu 8.10)
1. create a shell file called sto.sh
gedit sto.sh

write inside the file:
fnam=${1:2}
/usr/bin/totem ${fnam//'\'/'/'}

close the file and type
chmod +x sto.sh

(the shell file will strip the first two chars in filename i.e. "Z:" and substitutes \ with proper /)

then open emule options, click on "file" and in the command line write
/bin/bash /home/YOURSYSTEM/sto.sh

where YOURSYSTEM is your systme name (i.e. /home/blabla is your home directory)
You can of course substitute /usr/bin/totem with your preferred player (I used /usr/bin/smplayer)

I post this here since I didn't find any solution for my problem elsewhere and I hope this helps.
