Could I suggest that people specify what error they get on their blue screens, rather than saying "I get a blue screen". That would allow us all to figure out whether we're talking about the same problems. Incidentally, it's advisable to disable automatic rebooting, otherwise you'll never get to see the error at all.

My problem has only started in the last couple of months. I have a theory that my USB modem is starting to die, because it now refuses to install itself correctly in Windows 2000 (where before it worked without a problem), thus forcing me to use Windows XP, where I regularly get a blue screen with "The problem seems to be caused by the following file:" (and then no mention of any file). I'll try to remember to note down the first bit next time it happens (thus practising what I preach).

I've discovered that the frequency with which I get the BSOD depends on my download limit in eMule. If I set it below 30kb/s the crashes are very infrequent. If I set it above 40kb/s I can be pretty much guaranteed a crash every day. I wonder whether it's to do with the number of connections, although I see that eMule is hitting the connection limit (which is only 90) all the time, even at lower download limits. I'll keep doing tests and try to establish the cause.

I recently completed building my new pc system and all was running smoothly until i installed emule for the first time (0.47a). After 10 to 30 minutes from running emule i would get a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) with the following information

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

and the file that was causing the crash was NVTCP.SYS.

rolling back to an older emule version had no effect. After a lot of reading mainly in this forum i understood that the problem had to do with the nvidia network driver of my motherboard (Asus A8N SLI Premium). I use the nvidia network controller to hook up to my router and access the internet. After all NVTCP.SYS is one of the files installed with the nvidia network driver and network utilities like the nvidia firewall. Turning off the nvidia firewall did not help.

Thankfully my mobo has another network controller (Marvell). I used the Marvell network controller to connect to the internet and uninstalled the nvidia network drivers and nvidia firewall. After that i have been running emule 24/7 without problems.

Although i found a solution i don't believe it is the best one. I like the nvidia firewall and would prefer to connect to the net through the nvidia network controller. So i will try to find another way around this problem.

One thought is to play a little with my IRQ settings. The nvidia network bus enumerator is sharing the same IRQ with a USB Host Controller.

I'll post here again if i get lucky

My system:

ASUS A8N SLI Premium (Bios version 1011-005)
AMD Athlon X2 4800+
nvidia nforce4 chipset driver version 6.70
256MB Prolink 7800GT with Forceware 81.98 drivers
WD Raptor 74GB
Pioneer 110D DVD-RW
Antec P-160W case
Antec Truepower2 550W PSU

Hello Sony !!

Thanks for your help, I will try some of your advices.

Anyway, I want tell you :

* Windows 2000 is running on my pc and I had no problem with the 0,46c version of eMule.

* Since I have installed the 0,47a version  I have many problems.

* Now the dowloading are rare and low, often very low.

* Since one week, my PC reboot by itself too.
I don't use : Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm
I don't have proxy software

* Between the 0,46c and the 0,47a I didn't modificate my adjustment, especially concerning my firewall softawre (BitDefender)

"eMule itself can not make Windows XP/2000 crash" sure ??? :cry2:

Have someone same problems than me ? ?

Bye ! ! Read you soon ! !

I'm getting frequent BSOD's when (and only) disconnecting my ADSL connection from systray while eMule is downloading. I don't get the BSOD if I shutdown PC with eMule open or while in use. I have a 2048/256 DSL connection and I'm using 800/600 (maximum sources/maximum connections) with my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem (using latest drivers for Windows XP SP2). Also my Windows XP SP2 is fully updated by Windows Update.
I'm getting BSOD at afd.sys file.

Hello to all,

I read many of the posts to this topic, and I hope I am not repeating someone else's solution.

I will start from the end: It's one of Microsoft's Updates, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

and there's a single solution--> run a new install of windows on an old computer.

Here is the story:

1. My system is > win2000 professional 5.0.2195 sp4 build 2195
2. My machine: Just bought it a couple of months ago.
- processor Intel{R} Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz
- BIOS by PHOENIX V.6.00PG
- l2 cache 2,048 KB
- memory 1GB
- mainboard MSI 945P NEO
- VIDEO CARD RADEON X800 Series $500
- HD: 1. samasung SATA III 160GB - as Master
2. samsung ATA 80GB
3. Software:
P2P: emule, shareaza, limewire, bittorrent
SECURITY: NORTON AntiVirus 2005, Zonealarm Pro 6.x
4. Internet connection: LAN 1mp via shared IP (Yeah, shitty, I know), by ASUS

History:
Everything worked well, and then it just came out of nowhere...
Problem: one day it has all stopped working properly. All my P2P crushed randomly. The worst was emule *0.47b, it crushed after 2 min.
What is crush? windows stopped responding, frozen -- does not restart by itself -- needed manual turn off and on.

This is what I tried:
0. basic check ups: viruses, trojans, spyware, bad sectors etc -- system was intact.
1. Formatting my drives.
2. Tried WinXP (I hate it, but I gave it a go) - crush
3. Tried fresh install of W2K - crush
4. fresh install of Java's latest - crush
5. working my ATA as master - no no
6. working just with ATA - no good
7. did not install ZoneAlram, Norton, spy detect & destroy etc... crushing as usual
8. changed my LAN card PCI slot, let it have its own IRQ just for itself -- crush
9. updated all drivers: LAN, BIOS, Graphics You name it. -- no no
10. updated all microsoft's gadgets, plugins, tools, technology whatever -- no no
11. returned to old drivers that worked well once -- forget it.

I was left with some last options:
1. LAN card is faulty -- impossible, replaced it anyways -- no no
2. My internet provider might have bad connection -- my neighbour has same provider as well, his win98SE system does not crush at all.
3. My new PC might have hardware problems--aka ilnesses of the new technology. Checked documentation online: nothing.
Machine works fantastic in any other aspect. Memory errors are repeatedly checked by special software.
4. Microsoft continuous updates for everything? Hmmmmmm, makes you think. It is impossible to really know what each and every minor update
includes. Don't ever try to roll back and uninstall updates, it never works well for system beccomes highly unstable.

Yep, MICROSOFT again.

So, I went back to my old PC (PIII, 20GB, MSI motherboard) and installed W2K SP4 with no updates at all.

Works like a charm.

my problem is not just that blue screen and then the pc restarts

my pc actually shutdown. This is happening after a long time that e-mule is running

i thought it was a coincidence for the first time, but then when my pc turned off again on the next day, i realized that e-mule was the same thing that was running on the first

i might try to test this again

hi everybody. first of all I'm not fluent in english so excuse the poor grammar. I am SO desperately in need of help right now, so please, please reply this post.

for the past few months, windows (xp) has been crashing. no blue screen or anything, but it keeps restarting, for example when I wake up, I turn on the monitor and see the welcome screen. I've tried to solve this problem, have changed and fixed so many things, but it never really occured to me that emule could have been causing this. last few weeks, it was restarting within 1-2 hours, completely unbearable. then a week ago, I upgraded emule (from 0.46c to 0.47a), and so my download is gone! I've waited with an eternal patience and tried different things again (like opening new ports or installing different versions of emule) but nothing happened. My download speed was 0 most of the time, and sometimes 2-3.

So I've tried different versions. New, old, plus, mods, I've tried everything and waited for hours but I couldn't download anything. By the way when these were happening, xp crashes stopped. My computer, completely fixed (and I understood that the problem was emule 0.46c), but downloads are gone! Then, I got so desperate, I reinstalled 0.46c and ta-taam! 15 minutes after that, my download speed was 22 kb/s.

I think that's all. I have really, really tried everything like firewalls, id.s, limits etc. I believe, I have to find out the reason first, in order to fix this problem. I have no idea why I couldn't download anything with emule (except 46c), and I have no idea why the only working version keeps crashing my system, because there's nothing wrong with my system. So, have anyone had same problems like mine, or anyone knows how to fix this?

Thanks so much.

The reason why the earlier versions of eMule crush or don't download anything is because they're rejected by emule servers. Many of the big servers recognize and thus automatically reject emule versions that are too old. Parameters don't fit and that may cause the crush.

thank you for your reply, but 0.46c is not that old, and it downloads very well, but it makes xp crash all the time. the weird part is, the newest version (and older versions of 0.46c too, for that matter) don't crash at all, but they don't download anything either!

hi everyone,

i have been using emule 0.47a when for long as it was on internet. I had no problem until few days ago.

Emule after working a few hours (downloading well) crashes, windows shows the screen to report to somewhere for emule's crash.....

windows is running well even after emule crashes (no freeze or anything like that). I can re-run emule works fine for 1-2 hours then again crash.

i think it has nothing to do with the system (firewall, norton ...) because it was working well for nearly 1-2 month and nothing changed (i cant remember when 0.47a was on internet).

the problem may be the (.met) files emule uses BUT i do not want to lose anything i had downloaded until now.

Can you help me about this problem? which file may be corrupt and how can i restore it? (upto a point lets say)

thanks (sorry for my bad english)

Hello A quickie from on non techy person.

I accidentally turned the power off to my PC just now whlilst it was running emule. In PC terms does this constitute a crash? Or Freeze Or Blue DOS screen mentioned at the start of the thread? Or does a system manage itself in preperation for a simple power outage?

Dont know what it was UL or Dl at the time if anything.

Hi there,

Being a newbie too here :) and not much of a techy person...

I have Emule v0.47a running on my system together with Windows XP. Ever since a week or two I have been running Emule intensively. Experiencing no probs.
Last couple of nights I woke up finding my system rebooted and welcomed by the Welcome to Windows screen. Yesterday I figured "whatever", but today, I started reading up ont the topic on the forum. Not many yet on this version of Emule, still, some experienced my probs as well. What strikes me, is that there's been offered no solution for this problem. People are shifting versions, but I've yet seen a post that says: "It's because of this, so now do this..."
I have a Sygate Firewall and a broadband connectiontype. Now I have just set my max. sources/file to 400 and connection limit to 200; in case the many connections might cause the probs.

Hopefully there's some answer out there?

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Krista

yes i believe this is true, cause i have had no problems up till now, and i did notice that microsoftt has sent out some security updates recently in the past few days, hmm makes ya wonder?

here is whats going on with my emule;

like i said has worked fine always never had a problem till now, i left emule on the other day and was gone all night checked it the next moring and my system was hangging on a blue screen of death. So i turn it off wait a few min then turn it back on, try to start up emule and i dont get the loading emule interface, so i check in the windows task manager/processes and the emule exe is running but no emule present in sight, so i turn zone alarm off end emule exe try start emule again and it loads fine, after running for about 20/30 min sometimes less it stops responding i try end task and it will not, even after many attempts. Now im guessing that if emule hangs long enough like that that im sure the blue screen will appear eventually, as i have not wittnessed the blue screen in person its only when i leave emule running and i come back hours later, also i have noticed a file error in one of the downloads, the download bar is yellow and black , never saw this before.

There are 2 other things so far that i have noticed since emule stopped responding, first mozilla firfox has totally reset itself, none of my bookmarks are there all the prefences and the way i had it set before is all default now, weird. Second, i use trillian for aim,msn and soforth, now when i start it i get xml, and line script errors i have never seen before and have been using this proggy since it came out, also i have to go and change my preferences and add all my screennames again, and if i do this, then start emule and leave it on for awhile to the point where its not responding like i said ealier after a reboot i have to do this all over again in trillian, not sure if all this is realated but figured i would mention it and add it to the all the crap we all are experiencing, and i bet my left nutt its micro$hit's fault :furious:

Well I've worn my eyes out trying to read this whole thread and worn my head out trying to understand
it - doesn't help that many of the posts didn't seem to have word wrap, I don't know why, wonder if
that's some problem of mine or something to do with the thread, the forum?

I've got XP, eMule v0.47 and an Asus 8NSLI board with an Athlon 64 3200 - similar setup to some of the
posters.

And I get mysterious crashes and reboots.

I haven't been with eMule long but after a few days and downloading about 500Mbytes it now sits for hours
with nothing happening at all. The little globe icon showing the nature of your connection has a green arrow
the bottom left and a red arrow from the top right. No matter what I do I can't get two green arrows.

I'm currently connected to 'the longest pirate' - I couldn't do any good with donkey1 or 2 or 3, etc.

Right. That's my situation. I'm not asking for help. I've just read thirteen pages of 'help' about this problem.

So what do I want to say? I want to say this:

. eMule doesn't work reliably on Windows XP.

. It is not a 'windows update' problem. It is an eMule problem. You can't ask the platform to fit your
application. Applications must fit the platform.

. eMule needs to tell the user community just what the program is doing that might lead to conflicts and crashes. Instead of claiming it 'can't'. It quite obviously does. My programming days are over, I'd say, but they were there and I know that a programmer knows which parts of his programme are sensitive to the platform for one reason or another. eMule is no different. It could be 'trouble shooted' (to coin a clumsy phrase) by being broken into its parts as far as possible and each part being run to see which one it is that causes the crashes.

We, the users, could do that. If eMule made those modules available to us for that purpose.

Of course the programmers don't need to do that. They can run it in debug mode until they get a replication of the problem and then they can see clear as day what caused the crash.

Considering the wide interest and the general high level of intelligence and expertise of the eMule community I'm surprised - I'm quite startled - that it hasn't already been done.

. Until it is done and it becomes a reliable application - could someone please tell me what alternative I should look to? Bit torrent?

regards,

ab :)

abrogard, yes i totally 100% agree with everything u said i see what you mean, hopefully a new version will be comming soon.

to add an update to my problem i was having, after uninstalling i reinstalled and everything seemed to be working fine, it has been 12 days and its fking up again  one thing i figured out was that i have to diable zone alarm then start the emule, connect to a server then turn emule back on, otherwise the exe will run in the background with no interface showing. When it runs now it starts fine, i connect to a server then it freezes i can not end task, computer doesnt respond to anything cant open firefox nothing, infact i cant even shut down the pc normally. After i reboot, things in windows are changed, for example like i mentioned before firefox is totally reset and says firefox has been updated when it wasnt(atleast not today it wasnt), couple of my start up programs the settings are all back to default.

obviously its not a windows problem or a windows update cause i had it working for 12 days? hmm

as far as an alternative, i have not found anything better then emule, if there was i would not use emule anymore

and whats up with the lack of tech support in here? what are the programmers up to? new version perhaps?

i mean with such a wide fan base and successful program you would think we would here some info about this issue or even better yet some info on a new version
