Hi everybody,

There is a solution for some of you - maybe for all of you.. Some detective history first.

I had been running emule in its latest versions for ages (i.e. sometimes non-stop for weeks) over a period of about two years using a dial-up modem.

Then when I upgraded to cable broadband about Jan of this year and to the latest version of emule, I started to get the "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD) sometimes several per day.

So after reading this forum, I performed the following

Complete re-installation of XP, load modem driver, download windows updates, load software not supplied with the pc (including emule), then load user data files. Started the pc and then crash.....BSOD two days later.

So start again....reload all, check discs, ram, virus check, etc., crash after 2 hours.

Start again.......reload all, but changed emule back to version 0.30c......crash after 4days.

Start again.....reload all except some non-signed drivers, start emule v0.30c...crash...within 24 hours. :ranting:

Started to get to the point of giving up on emule. It's not worth it, if you have to download one file at a time. And a full reload takes me about 10 hours. Figured it had to be an emule problem.

But then my pc crashed when I didn't have emule running!!! - (first time ever!) but I noted I was surfing.

So I started to explore the web (collected a wonderful set of free pc diagnostics tools in my travels). Hunting down and looking at every web record of BSOD occurance that seemed remotely helpful.

All my drivers were signed and the diagnostics didn't show anything. Except when I ran a "clean boot" and found one of the drivers was kicking in (MS OCA - online crash analysis was no help).

Disabled the XP auto restart on a BSOD crash and started taking details of the offending drivers that caused the crash.

And then one day my doggedness / stupidity for continuing to look for a solution paid off.

It appears that Microsoft has modified something in one of their XP updates (to "media sensing") that causes a problem for some USB drivers. :-k

Three appears to be three solutions.....

For those of you using telewest cable / scientific atlanta webstar usb modem see

http://www.blueyonde...usbdriverupdate

where you can download the drivers. Unfortunately, some cable companies have not informed their customers directly but only put it on their website, so I suggest that you go and check the websites of your supplier and not assume that they will seek you out. I would pester your USB device suppliers for a new driver and ensure that they are aware of the media sensing problem.

For those that can't get an updated driver that works, then there is a solution at the following that by-passes the windows "media sensing" problem...

http://www.hardwarea...ent/topic/17273

This is also where I first started to see the light. Failing that I suggest you follow the link to disable "media sensing" see

http://support.micro...kb;EN-US;239924

(note this problem should not occur if you have a dialup which is why I never had the problem previously as it only occurs on the USB)

One more thing. I went through the driver update route as given by the driver supplier but it still crashed. So I did a search on the pc and manually copied over each occurance of the driver file on my c: and d: drives.

So far for three weeks, I have been running emule nearly non-stop 24x7 (except where I needed to twice close it down to install some other new software) and it is working fine. I have even requested over 80 files concurrently to be download and it's okay. No problem with speed and I got over 10 files downloading at the same time (hitting my modem limits), can do all the other things I want to at the same time. And my XP firewall is still in place (never removed it).

All I needed to do was update ALL instances of my USB modem drivers (don't forget the one in the "last good config" that windows may use when booting up).

Life seems to nice again.

I have learnt that even if all my drivers are signed & approved, an official windows update from MS can cause a problem to an otherwise stable system.

I hope the above helps some of you.

Good luck... :+1:

Soulman

ps sorry to give the history but I needed to get four months worth of frustation
of my chest....

Well, it sure looked promising, but in my case disabling the Media Sensing feature didn't do any good. Blue screen within minutes.

Thanks a lot anyway, man. I'm glad it's working for you, after all the hard work you very well deserve it.

A recent change has made kad incompatable with my pc. It's either a new version of emule or an updated Intel Pro 100 driver that came from Microsoft.
If I have Kad enabled, I will get a blue screen complaining about symdns.sys which is a part of of Norton Internet Security.

I'll let you all know if i find a solution moe useful than disabling kad. :-)

I found the old driver and it is now sorted. Funny how it seemed to belly up only with Kad.

Hi
I recently installed windows xp service pack 2. after this installation my emule doesnt start.
i doubble clicked the icon and the exe but no task appears not even in task manager. so i reinstalled my 42d version of the mule and now the new 42f version by installer, but still the same problem.
i also had recently several problems with viruses/worms. i have antivir software up to date but the virus affected my system and i couldnt really connect to internet.
i made a full system scan an found a blaster worm and earased it. the problem was fixed. this was before my service pack 2 installation.

so what to do?
the emule doesnt start
there's some activity on my hdd when i try to start but no task appears anywhere

plz give me some tips

thx

SP2 changes the network and Internet settings completley the XP Firewall is then very powerfull and so on. Many settings were changed automaticly so you have to go in your Seystemsettings and change everything back by hand.

But I can tell you more by tomorrow because I am about to install sp2 in my PC

Edit !
I did install SP2 and it works fine even with emule. You mac should check for ind the Help funktio for "Data Execution Prevention" thats new and seems working onley with some Processors and my AMD XP 2400 is not one of them.

XPSP2 is apparently still in beta. I'd avoid it.

Not that that solves your problem, but if Microsoft itself says it may have problems, then I'd believe them.

Hi. :D
I would like to tell you what happened to me. My experience may help others:
Recently I instaled a new version of emule and tweaked in the number of open connections on Preferences/Connection. I left the computer alone and it crashed. I restarted emule and it crashed again. After rebooting, the computer was very, very slow. I had another time the message saying that "the system recovered from a serious problem". I pressed the button to connect to "Microsoft crash Analyses" and there it was a sugestion that my computer was having trouble writing on the disk.
I checked the speed of the disk and in fact the numbers were very, very low. DMA Mastering mode was disabled and Windows XP was running automaticaly in this safer setting.
I don't know were Windows stores this setting so I just went to control panel and removed the disk, interface, and chip controllers. I rebooted (this time voluntarily!) and tweaked the speed on my BIOS. I've slowed the system down a bit, and restarted. The system detected the "new" hardware. After that I've also changed on Emule 0.42f the number of maximum open connections down a bit just to be sure.
I'm satisfied with the system now, and the disk is running more than 10 times the previous speed. The CPU is 20% less speedy, but who cares. The system is running reliably now and Emule doesn't crash.
My conclusion is that Emule was not exactly the problem, but has it stresses the system, it can crash more.
This may teach overclockers (like me ;) ) that sometimes you want more and get less!
Cheers

My Windows XP crashes too, sadly, but always after some 20-30 minutes since I run my eMule. From the task manager I see that when the system is crashng the CPU utilization is (obviously) at 100%, but 95-96% is taken only by the process VSMON.EXE; when I shut down eMule, as a consequence, VSMON.EXE goes back to 0-1%...
Maybe this information can be of some help for someone who knows more than me about OSs and all the stuff relatedPaueroso - my blog...

I use W2000.

With zonealarm firewall, emule 0.42 crashes after 20-40 minutes. I changed firewall to Sygate and it started working better but still crashing & using 90-100% system resources.

My hard drive system was FAT32 but after I changed it to NTFS, emule start working much better. :) Well anyway i'll have to test more to see how much longer it will work :worthy:

In earlier message i said that change from Fat32 to NTFS could help. It worked only because i started emule with this way.

When my computer starts, it automatically opens Sygate firewall.

1. I will open Zonealarm firewall
2. Close Sygate firewall
3. Open emule, & connect it into servers
4. Open Sygate (now emule connection is on & data is transfering)
5. Close Zonealarm.

After this I'm running emule with Sygate firewall.. Somehow it's keeping it self more stable.

I was using 0.42f version with ZA pro 4.5.594 WITHOUT problems. Then i had the great idea of UPDATING ZApro to version 5.0.590.015 and emule started to crash!!!I updated to emule 0.42g but no help.I went back to my old version of ZApro, but still no help.It seems the new version of ZApro changed some settings or files on my win2kpro system. :(

I did the same thing after downloading v0.42g. (updated my ZA) After that, when i ran emule my DSL connection stays open, but there wasn't any traffic at all. Nothing. No program could access internet anymore even though coneection was open. Emule stopped responding and finally the whole system crashed. I experienced with ZA's port settings but since that didn't help I installed Sygate and limited my emule connections to 200. (from 400) Since then I haven't had any problems running emule.

ZA seems to have been the problem in my case, so if you can get rid of it. That may help in some cases.

Same here, after updating ZA to 5.0.590.015, eMule hangs, then the traffic, and then the system.

Same here. Latest verson of Kerio PF workes wonderfully, though.

(And there was much rejoicing.)

I installed it and ran without trouble for a couple of days, though really slow connections. Figured out how to comfigure the router/firewall from the help and nailed that.

Then suddenly my machine (Win2K on Intel 2.6 hyperthreaded) began to hang after a few minutes. The eMule would stop completely, sometimes taking the OS with it.

Reading here, I wondered if the culprit might be the new ZoneAlarm Pro version 5 which I had just installed. Uninstalled it, reinstalled the last iteration of version 4, and (touch wood!) have been getting insane speeds without hang for the last five hours, nearly the theoretical max of my 512 ASDL connection.

Maybe not the universal culprit, but the firewall issue is definitely one to look at for Win2K users.

i found somewhere on the forum that it could be a problem with high-id, so i changed my router settings to run low-id, and emule now works perfectly well (except of some problems getting in to some servers)
