Hi all

I've been using eMule for a few years and I'm at version v0.50a

As my desktop is getting quite old, I'm planning to replace it with a new desktop PC,
going from Windows Vista, to the new Windows 10.

Questions:

(1) Considering that I will NOT be moving any partially downloaded files, and will
start with a clean/empty download/transfers list, can I just do a new install
of eMule instead of copying folders from one PC to the other ?

(2) If I do a clean install, BUT still want to retain/migrate a history of all
previously downloaded files, is that possible ? I've read somewhere that the
history is stored in a file called "known.met" -- does that mean that I can
just copy that file from the old PC into the same directory on the new PC, and
and the history will be immediately available to eMule, or is there something
else that needs to be done to complete the process ?

Thanks !

Orlando

Hi OBM - Orlando. :)

1) You can also download the portable version of emule (binaries or zipped or compressed or packed, like you prefer to call it), it is not necessary to install it (but you can install it, if you prefer, of course).
Remember the official version is on sourceforge.net and it's the one with thousands of downloads per week, hundreds of millions of downloads for the last 14 years.
Well, here (click).

2) I think there will be no problems if you'll copy almost all of the files inside the old config folder to the new one (with emule closed!), except these: category.ini, downloads.bak, downloads.txt, preferences.ini, shareddir.dat, sharedfiles.dat.
That's because you should check and modify the paths inside those files if you want to import them correctly, but it is probably less tedious and faster to re-create them.

INCONCEIVABLE! - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

To keep the history you need more than one file.
Try to read around the Docs if you want to know more.

Grazie, Xilolee!

Regarding the config folder, mine is currently in the directory shown mentioned
below.

I see the 2 "downloads" files and the 2 shared* files, but I don't see the
category.ini file, and I see 3 different "preferences" files.

Should I copy everything EXCEPT copy the 7 files listed below ?

O.

The CONFIG folder path is: C:\USERS\XXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\eMule\config

The 7 files I was referring to above are:

- downloads BAK
- downloads Text document
- preferences.dat DAT file
- preferenes Configuration Settings
- preferencesKad.dat DAT file
- shareddir.dat DAT file
- sharedfiles.dat DAT file

The category.ini isn't created if you don't use and create categories.
The other preferences* files should be copied.
The preference.ini should be the one that says "preferences Configuration Settings".
The .ini extension doesn't appear because in folder options - view hide extensions for known file types is ticked.
(Control Panel\Appearance and Personalisation - file explorer options (win10) or folder options (previous versions))

Make it simple, copy and overwrite all of the config directory contents.
Just rememeber to change in Options (or in the text of preferences.ini file) all directories references that might be different in your new OS.
