My old install is dead and I just installed Emule anew.
I would like the new install to recognize the old downloads
in the search pane. To this extent, is it sufficient that I
paste the old known.met file in the config folder?

Help appreciated!

Hello, add known.met and known2_64.met and it should be enough.
Apart from these files I would recommend you to copy paste all files from your old config folder but preferences.ini, in which you can find configuration settings that may not match your actual system configuration.
What does it mean "my old install is dead"? As a general rule reinstalling eMule is never necessary and it is usually a bad idea.

It means that on certain computers I was unable to see my searches and that sometimes the download pane didn't display the current progress. I was afraid of a crash and of losing all my downloads and so I reinstalled Emule. (I am using portable versions anyway.)

This should never happen.
I hope you are talking about emule.zip that you can find in downloads (binaries) and not about anything you can find on the web as everythig else is potentially harmful.

Uhm... that might well be the source of the problem. The file I installed and then reinstalled is named: eMule_Portable_0.50a_Multilingual.paf.exe

Is the official install portable? If it is, I might reinstall emule for the third time.

If you install eMule by using "Store config and downloads in the program directory" then you may cut your eMule folder from C:\Program Files and paste it in an external drive to use it as a portable version.
Please note it is not recommended to use this option if you don't want to cut the folder because you will get write errors if your operating system is Windows Vista or newer.

Let me see if I understand -- what you mean by 'cutting the folder' is that in Options -> Directories I should pick new folders for the temp and incoming files, and these folders should be located where the main program is installed. (That's exactly what I want to do, since I use Emule from a flash drive.) This way I will prevent writing mistakes in Vista and above. Is that correct?

Thanks a lot for your help.

You are welcome.
No, I mean to cut the whole C:\Program Files\eMule directory from C: and paste it in your flash drive, in example paste it in E:\eMule.
Everything, not just Incoming and Temp.

I tried it and it works beautifully. Thanks!

There should be some advice on the official page that the original version can be turned portable.
