I have the eMule directories on an external HDD. The USB connection to the disk proves to be a bottleneck. Specially when the final hash of a large file occurs. When for instance a 12 GB file is hashed it takes all USB transfer capacity for a considerable time (like an hour or so). In that period usually all or most of my download and upload threads die. That may sometimes happen at particularly inconvenient moments.
So I propose an option in the settings to manually start the final hash. And maybe an option under the right mouse button to pause a particular hash.

It would also be good if it just happened but would have a very low priority so the upload/download threads would not be obstructed. But that may not be possible and maybe eMule shouldn’t bother too much about my special case of having it on an external disk.

While the hash is pending or going the file should be available for upload and existing upload threads should not be interrupted.

See Throttle Hashing. The issue is not limited to external hard drives, it's also an issue on internal, specially if you have just one and want to do something else with the machine.

Oh, I only read back till 2010, figuring previous discussions would be old news. But the problem still stands. And as you said then, the bottle neck is not the CPU but the disk access, so just setting process priority won't help. If there would be a way to set disk I/O priorities that would help I guess.
I thought of those things in the way up to posting this thread but figured that process priority wouldn't help and disk I/O priority would not be possible. But I may be wrong about the latter.
And indeed if you wait for weeks to get a file, 5 minutes extra waiting for the hash is no problem. Also because when that happens you can be reasonably sure you have it.

I have my eMule directories on an external hdd too and with my multicore processor nothing but eMule is affected. But still...
