Pc Configuration
- Operating System – Windows XP Pro SP3
- Internet connection type (Bandwidth, Eg: 1024/320 DSL) – 8000/512 ADSL
- Modem, Router, Proxy (manufacturer and model) – Zyxel P600 D1
- Firewalls – Comodo
- Antivirus – Avira
- Spyware detector – Spybot S&D
- Emule Version – v0.50a

Emule Settings (Options tab)
- Dl/Ul capacity – 600/64
- Dl/Ul limits – unlimited/ 40
- Hard limit – 500
- Max Connection - 200
- Activated networks (ED2k, Kad, Both) – Both
- Max. new connection/5 secs (Options -> Extended) – 20
- Max half open connection (Options -> Extended) – 9
- Ports TCP/UDP – 55662 / 55672 port forwarded in Zyxel router

Emule General
- Numbers of servers in your server list (How to get a good server list) – 12 from http://www.gruk.org/server.met.gz
- High ID or Low ID – My info shows High ID, but Options, Connections, Test Port fails
- Number of downloading files and average number of sources – Downloads: 27 (from Transfers); Active downloads: 3 (from Statistics),[I cannot see a stat for average number of sources]
- Number of shared files - 109
- Used server name and IP (eg: DonkeyServer NO1) - eDonkeyServer No2
- Internet Service Provider (ISP) – One that does not block ports or shape traffic
- Is Protocol Obfuscation enabled? - Yes
- Found sources (Statistics -> Transfer -> Downloads -> Session -> Found sources) – 811

Session UL:DL Ratio: 2.46:1
Cumulative UL:DL Ratio: 1.14:1

[Globe Icon at bottom of screen] Connected, high ID in eD2k, low ID (firewalled) in Kademlia

The problem I have is that even with ports forwarded in my router, rules in the Comodo firewall and eMule showing HighID when I connect to eDonkeyServer No2, it downloads as Low ID.

How do i know it is actually Low ID?

If I use the Options, Connections, Test Ports button, the test fails on the TCP connection saysing that eMule is not accepting the connection. I have used several port testers and found that with eMule off I can positively test TCP and UDP ports; with eMule running the TCP port will pass, but the UDP port fails.

However, Comodo’s active connections page shows that eMule is definitely connecting through both TCP and UDP ports.

I have disabled the Comodo firewall and reconnected KAD by bootstrapping from http://www.nodes-dat.com, but this still gives a long list of yellow, orange and some red (not green) IDs on the KAD page.

What’s left to check?

And when comodo is disabled, are the arrows on the globe both green?

Port test should be used only with emule just opened and NOT connected.

Just ignore port test if you get High ID.

I disabled the Comodo Firewall, restarted (but not connected) eMule and pushed the Test Ports button: port forwarding works.
Connected to eDonkey server No2 and KAD resulting in... two yellow arrows, Low ID and KAD Firewalled.

With DC++ (which runs well) switched off. I restarted and reconnected eMule... one green arrow, High ID and KAD Firewalled

Then disconnect and connect again a few minutes later, I get... KAD Firewalled and a warnign in the Server Log that my TCP port is unreachable over several retries.

If I exit eMule and restart, then I can connect to a High ID, and KAD Firewalled again instantly.

The only thing I can think of is that my rooter cannot handle th enumber of connections, but this router does seem to be highly rated in reviews.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the link. I tried all that, but still KAD is firewalled.

Missing informations
Have you downloaded your eMule client from sourceforge.net ? >> Yes

Is "use upnp..." checkbox ticked (in options connection)? >> No

Are you using peerguardian/peerblock/ip filters or similars? And what of those? >> IP Filter using file generated from Bluetack Blocklist manager and http://www.bluetack....nfig/level1.zip and Level 2.

What do you read in server tab under my info - kad network? (Status: Open/firewalled; UDP Status: Open/Open (unverified/Firewalled)

Most often this: Status: Firewalled, UDP Status: Open
Sometimes this: Status: Open, UDP Status: Open

Manufacturer and model of your router? (I didn't find your "P660-D1", but these: "P660H-D1" "P660HW-D1" "P660HW-D1v2" "P660R-D1") >> it is a ZyXEL P-660R-D1 Internet Sharing Gateway

Describe how your devices are arranged. >> Line comes into a BT Openreach vDSL socket (with built in filters), telephone cable to socket of router, Etherthet cable to unmanaged switch, Ethernet cable to PCs.

I have also run with a Dlink DSL524 router bridged to work as a modem only connected directly to main PC giving direct connection to internet. This gives the same results.

How many pcs are using p2p programs (emule or others) and which ports are they using? >> only PC uses p2p.
Emule: Port=64662, UDPPort=64672, ServerUDPPort=64665
DC++: TCP=1414, TLS=1413, UDP=1412

Screenshots of your router menus are welcome:

UPNP >> No using upnp. Everything is set manually.

DHCP >> PC has fixed IP on network
Virtual server/port forwarding >> Active NAT, SUA only selected. Port forwarding is in place and fully tested working. See below for more information.

Eventual firewall screen (of your router) >> There is not a firewall screen

Have you put static ip to your pc? >> Yes, with the correct subnet and the router IP as gateway and DNS Server

On the PC I run Comodo Firewall configured as described here http://www.techsuppo...do-firewall.htm
For simplicity I have eMule as a Trusted Application.

Problem:

With eMule and DC++ off I have tested the port forwarding using “Simple Port Tester” by PcWinTech.com. I can then switch off Simple Port Tester and on eMule and (before Connecting) get a positive Test Ports result. Then Connect to a server and have a High ID with usually KAD Status: Firewalled, UDP Status: Open, but it sometimes goes to Open/Open. So it all looks good.

However, after a period, the server I am connected to will either drop my connection of just drop my ID to Low ID, usually eMule will try a few servers before managing to connect to one with Low ID. The KAD status, if it had been Open, will now be Firewalled too. The Server log shows that my TCP port is unreachable.

I can switch off eMule and use Simple Port Tester to find all the ports are working fine. Swithc eMule back on and go through the cycle again: High ID, but KAD usually Firewalled, but the port is Open, then the server drops to Low ID.

Where it gets even more complicated is if I try to use DC++ together with eMule. If I have both off, then start DC++ it works perfectly, but if I then start eMule, DC++ behaves as if the port forwarding has failed.

I don't have a problem getting on KAD, only in keeping Status:Open... and getting a decent downloading rate.

I have had the same results with:
  • Comodo, Aviva AV and SpyBot SD
  • All uninstalled using Revo Unistaller set to maximum uninstall and PC directly connected to internet with no router and therefore no need for port port forwarding.
  • Comodo and Aviva only (current set up

Have you reserved your private IP in DHCP - lan ip - client list?
(In this case I think you could "obtain ip address automatically" from tcp/ip properties of your LAN connection)
Have you tried without ipfilters?
Have you tried changing ports?
In case the router is bugged, have you considered to upgrade its firmware (if you haven't done it yet)?

Latest firmware of your router:
P-660R-D1 version 3.40(AGE.5)C0 ; date: 5/27/2011

I have made some progress, I think. It seems that whatever the problem it is made worse by running eMule and DC++ together. But for several years I was running them both together and was getting much higher download rates on both, although both would lose their connection a few times a day at best.

I have been running eMule alone with a steady connection since 17:50 yesterday and it has stayed on the same ed2k server throughout - PEERATES 88.191.81.111:7111. The KAD connection has also been steady: Status: Firewalled, UDP Status: Open. I have not been able to move it to Status: Open by rechecking firewall.

It is running firmware: V3.40(ANZ.6) | 04/08/2009. I only found firmwar listed as v3.4 before, but you are right there is an update which I will try.

I had tried changing ports.

I had not tried running without an IP Filter file.

I am reluctant to switch off eMule to make any changes and prefer to leave it running another 24 hours or more first to see if my download rate increases over time and if the connection remains stable while DC++ is switched off. Then I will update the firmware and remove IP Filters and see what if any improvement that makes.

At the moment it seems like the probelm is a clash between eMule and DC++, which was still there when I was running through a modem with direct connection to the internet and Comodo uninstalled. The only real difference was that with that set up I could get the KAD Status to move from Firewalled to Open.

Running several p2p applications simultaneously requires special care. Count in Skype and some other programs too.
Probably you can see messages about reaching TCP connection limit in system's Event log.

These? How do I raise the limit or reduce any impact of this limit?

eMule alone with your connection settings (basically, the defaults) does not cause events 4226.
What other network applications are running? If none, I'm afraid you should check the system for malware.

Even though I do have online protection and run regular full scans, just to be sure, over the weekend I scanned with:

F-secure Online Virus Scanner - http://www.f-secure....l/removal-tools
SUPERAntiSpyware
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
combofix.exe
RootRepeal
MGtools
(Read this for details:http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313)

Then, reinstalled Avira AV and Comodo firewall.

So I am confident that my PC is not infected with anything.

I have used XP-Antispy to set the TCP connections from 10 to 200.

I have also set eMule TCP Connections to:

Max new connections /5 sec :50
Max half open connections :50

The other settings in this section are:

Fast connection reject: ticked
Server connection refresh interval: 0

After a period of running eMule is losing the server connection. When it finds a server to connect to it is at Low ID and in the Log looks like this:

Before connecting I had used SimplePortTester and confirmed that the eMule ports were all open. I then started eMule and used its post test to confirm that the ports were seen by eMule.

So why does it go from High ID to Low ID and say the ports are not reachable?

I have identified some information in Comodo Firewall Active Connections that I do not understand, but may be an issue.

My problem with eMule is that it starts normally, but soon loses the connection and reports that the TCP port 64662 is unreachable. I have read that Active Connections is supposed to update real time as processes connect and disconnect through the firewall.

This currently shows:

Windows Operating System [444]
emule.exe [2640]
spt.exe [2064]
emule.exe [688]

all TCP listening on: 64662
all 0 Bytes In and 0 Bytes Out

However ONLY emule.exe [688] is actually running. I have tried manually terminating connection (context menu is Active Connections) on the others, but this does not appear to work.

Any ideas?

Would you mean that you have got two emules running, with two different PIDs?
