I have installed eMule more than a dozen times on my new computer (Windows 7) and have the same problem each time.

During installation I get an error message:

Error Opening File for Writing:
C:\Program Files(x86)eMule\emule.exe

If I click 'ignore file' the installation goes on, but the program will not launch. I click on the shortcut and nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

In further exploration I come up with a message that says it is an incompatible program:

Programs+Compatibility+Application+Applications+App+Apps+Game+Games+Legacy+Crash+Crashes+Hang+Hangs

Suggestions

Thank you for any guidance.

BTW, I had no problem running eMule on Windows Vista Home Premium. I tried to reconfigure to allow eMule to be regarded as a Vista program, but it did not work.

You do not have permission to write into Program Files directory.
I suggest you to read Shared usage article in Docs.
Either you get those permissions (configuring UAC, running installer as administrator) or install it outside of Program Files directory, like in C:\eMule\.

Thanks Fox88.

I changed my status to administrator. eMule installed, but with the same warning message. It actually launched for a few minutes and then crashed while trying to make KAD links. After that it would not reopen.

Like I said, this is a brand new computer and I'm still trying to get it configured. I need to be able to download and install other programs, too.

Well, I also added myself as the 'secret administrator' which kinda like being God.

Same problems. Same pattern.

OK, after restarting I was able to download and install eMule as the Administrator. However, the Search and Download functions do not work.

Where you installed eMule and where are it's working folders?
Please take a look at this topic to get understanding that we need a lot more information beyond 'it's not working'.
Additionally, I suggest you to get some reading in the Docs, probably starting with Beginner's guide.

My problem was easy to resolve, once I enabled the 'hidden' administrator in Windows 7. Here's what I did:

hope this is useful
