I have a 128KB upload connection and have around 40 slots open at 3KB upload that's crazy.
I really like eMule because it works whitout any servers or websites and it's censoring proof and you can share everything. But this slots function makes is useless for fast file shearing, how ever implementeded this wanted to kill eMule.

There should not be 40 slots with 128KB connection in official eMule. Most probably you have things severely misconfigured.

eMule always tries to give out 3kB/s to every client (which counts up to ~1 chunk per h) and I agree: this should be changed as the times of modem/ISDN connections are (nearly) over.

@fox88: 128kB/s / 40 = ~3kB/s - that's correct.

But isn't the current version (or let's say any not too old) supposed to open less slots on fast connections? For me for 50KBps Upload it opens 12-13 slots, that's about 4KBps per slot. IIRC, something like that was in the changelog once, together with the limit of max. 100 upload slots.

@Outbreaker: what you actually want is SlotFocus and not SlotLimiter, the last one is actually bad for the network, as it might cause your upload not to be used to it's full capacity.

I want SlotLimit not SlotFocus Torrent and other P2P Programs have this to and it works great. :)
There is no problem to add an extra option if the upload speed is under 60% to open some slots till the upload speed is at 90% but it should also close them if the extra slots are not needed anymore.
Not only is the SoltLimit a problem for me but also because eMule has no IPv6 Support. My new Fiber Internet Connection i get has no IPv4 NAT support if i want that then i need to play 4€ more every month.
And if eMule opens around 40 Slots on a 128KB upload then i don't want to know what happens on a 50MB upload probably a harddisk collapse. :)

If i look at the eMule Team page then it looks like eMule is dead. :(
Why aren't all this modders come together and make eMule what it was before?
eMule needs changes or it will die completely.

I know i can use a mod but i will not waste my upload on a bad network and pay 4€ more to have IPv4 NAT to use eMule.
eMule needs a reboot or it will dead in the next 3-5 years.

This is not correct.
The question was discussed a number of times; and everyone interested could lookup for GetSlotLimit function in UploadBandwidthThrottler.cpp.
3KB/s is only the minimum datarate for a slot. It gets adjusted according to available bandwidth.
For example, I have 26 slots with 200KB/s limit.

AFAIK GetSlotLimit() is only used by the throttler... IIRC you should check CUploadQueue::AcceptNewClient which will allow new slots to be opened... I may be wrong, though, didn't check in a long time.

You are right that when necessary (Low ID or stalled slots), eMule could open more slots than the throttler calculated. But the number does not stay constant and tends to go down to the target (calculated in throttler) value.
While here, according to what the OP wrote, we have a case of 128KB/s upload connection and 128KB/s limit.

The developers that are still alive should put a news on the website that eMule needs coders to get it back on track again. I hat to use torrent but i have no other choice. :ranting:

You should post a proper support request, because as had been said, your client isn't configured as it should be, if fox88 has 26 slots with 200KB/s, you should have less than that with your 128KB/s and not the maximum that eMule will open at that setting.

No you cannot. I have to reduce upload to 20 KB/s, or else it would open dozens on dozens worth of slots. At first, it may have slots larger then 3KB/s, few hour later, there are countless tiny 3KB slots, that slowly kills hard discs.

That sounds like a problem with your connection or simply wrong settings in eMule, which cause that problems.

Let's make it clear: you have little idea how eMule works and how to set it up; 'killing hard disks' part makes me cry.
You should make a support request in proper subforum.

You are not being truthfull. I do know how to set it up, I can see how it works.
I set 20KB/s means 6 x 3KB/s slots
I set 40KB/s means 12 x 3BK/s slots
and so on
When some slots are slower then 3KB/s, emul will pick up the slack, yes it does. But even if the downloaders are calpable to download faster then 3KB/s, the amount of slots is not being reduced. Once emul open x amount of slots, it will not go down. Amount is there to stay, it does.
Too many slots = too many simultaneous reading from different sectors of the hard disc = unnecessary strain on the hard disc = reduced life span of the hard disc.
Six slots is about right. more then that is too much. Thats why I have to reduce upload, even if my connection can endure much more.

No, it's not like that, I have about 12 slots at 50KB/s, sometimes just 11 sometimes up to 14, I think it happens with many LowID clients. I think 11 is the number eMule would like to keep at that speed without all those LowIDs. fox88 had posted something about 26 slots with 200KB/s, seems about right.

Before we read more crap about killing hard drives with some not even nearly noteworthy load for any current drive eMule might generate with the upload speeds we are talking about, read this. You might run into some performance issues, if you have 10+ Mbits upload and just one hard drive in your system, but you and Outbreaker are not even close to that. Still, you won't kill the drive with it as long as it's operating within a reasonable temperature range (about 35-45°C).
