I had a critical look at the search tab and had some questions:

Posted Image

1. How often does someone change the search method? Long time ago i set it to Kad Network and never changed it. If we don't change it often than this drop down belongs in Options.
2. How many of us do use extended filters and how often? I use them every now and then, so i would not mind not seeing them all the time.
3. What does "More" button do? I don't recall ever using it?
4. Do we really need two button to start a search and to stop it?
5. How can more vertical space be saved in order to provide more space for results? After some thinking about i found a way to save 150 pixels to allow extra 9 search results to be displayed - on a screen with 1280x1024 resolution that means an increase by 25% (from 40 to 49).

Let me show i did it:

I got 65 pixels by completely removing status bar, moving download button to the top and removing weird looking fat bar under the search results (area 2).
Currently the only important information displayed in the status bar is the little globe with two arrows. Those arrows allow me to see how well i am connected. If i could i would move that dynamic image to the top of the screen and replace with it the "Connected" icon on the main tool bar.

And i got other 85 pixels by simplifying search interface (area 1) and making it 1 raw high. I moved the fine-tuning filter to the left - this "frame" displayed when you press Posted Image button.

Filetype dropdown can be combined with the search bar itself. You can even sort document types in that list by how often one is being used. Selecting a document type puts teh type icon and the type name (grayed out cursive) in the search box.

Typing in the search text box produces a little "Reset/Clear" red cross on the right and enables "Start Search" Button. Pressing on that button starts search and the button changes into a "Stop search" button (see below).

For humanitarian reasons, tab icons display filetypes (video, audio etc) instead of search type (KAD, Server, etc).

Below you can see that once a file or many files are selected the "Download button" is enabled.

When you have many search results tabs you can navigate to any of them by clicking at the little check button (at the rightmost end of tabs bar). The same menu allows closing all search results. Note, that the little "<" and ">" for scrolling the tabs are intuitively positioned at the corresponding end of the tabs bar.

DISCLAMER: yes i was inspired by Firefox 4.0 :)

This bar is not looking that weird/useless if you're using categories, so this functionality is somehow lost in your design, but besides of that: :+1:
So poste ich richtig! (besonders Punkt 2 beachten)

Also my 1st thought, but I guess category choice could be made into a dropdown list, too.

very nice.
Particularly when using a 1366x768 resolution (notebooks), I bet.

One thing I sure would stumble over (again and again) is with the extended filters box not visible all the time : I would start searching for say an emulecollection, with still minsize=so-may-MB active. B)

Well, the current way isn't optimal anyway since you have to scroll thru the filters, so you can still overlook something... altough I can't remember using anything else than file size limits.

Any filled in filter values should be ignored when Filter frame is not visible

Both Filters and Categories live side by side in the Extra's frame.

Posted Image

They can be opened and closed independently of eachother

Right clicking on the Filter Header allows selecting filters to be used/shown

Thanks. Good things come at price, don't they? :)

On the other hand, these are actually all separate "features requests" or rather enhancements here:
  • More indicative Connection button in the main tool bar (top left).
  • Being able to hide Status Bar
  • Moving "Search Method" selection drop-box to options window
  • Adding a (hide-able) Extra's frame left of the search results list
  • Moving "Categories" interface to the Extra's frame
  • Moving "Extra Filter" grid to the Extra's frame
  • Adding context menu to modify "Extra Filter" grid
  • Slight reworking of search controls
  • Reworking tabs interface
  • visual pimping up

All of these can be done independently from each other in a piece-meal-growth fashion. They don't even have to be implemented in the same version. Also I think that when taken separately they are all quite easy to implement.
