OK if the sources are queried and I know of specific number of known sources as they are friends, why are so many files red when they should be medium to dark blue.

unfortunately, some rare files with only 1 complete source could be in red because that source is not connected ...
if you have also a router, your emule contact sources more slowly than with a normal modem ... and you can see in red your files because it requires more time (even though your files have high availability/sources).
you could also have bad servers, or you could be connected to a server with low users'number (with a high users'number emule contacts sources before) .... low or high users'number, emule uses the source exchange (clic)

Some are now using the Extreme mod and that one filters out fake servers fairly well. We all also use Kad to avoid the dead server problem. I like the additions of the Extreme and they are mostly very handy dealing with fake users and servers.
I think the server filter could be added to the main eMule as its a solid way to counter the interdiction of the MPAA and RIAA et al.
