Hi y'all! I'm new to eMule and, I can see i came in a bad time, as most of the servers are getting offline. While reading the forum (yes, i'm a newbie that actually reads posts!) I got the impression there is a transition from servers to Kad. I searched a bit and downloaded the latest notes.dat file from emule-inside.com.

Questions:

a. Is that ok, or is there a better notes.dat file?
b. Is bootstrapping just a fancy way of saying "connect" on Kad "lingo" (i know it's not, as there is an actual "connect" button, so what's the difference)?

Thanx in advance.

Well, definitely the time is not wrong to get familiar with Kad ;)

a. If you got a connection than it's ok. I personnally had problems with the nodes.dat from emule inside the last time I tried, but that's some weeks ago now, maybe they updated it in the meantime. Just in case it doesn't work, an alternative for example can be found at nodes-dat.com. (BTW it's called nodes.dat)
But it's important to know that you only need to download an external nodes.dat if you don't get a connection to Kad at all! There's no better/worse nodes.dat, it's only important that it makes you get a connection. eMule then updates the nodes.dat automatically.

b. Bootstrapping has a meaning, but it's hard to explain, so I won't ;) . But Wikipedia may be capable of enlightening you.
But yes, here it basically means the same as connecting.
PS: The difference, I think, is that with the "bootstrap" button you first do the thing which you have chosen with one of the three radio buttons. When you click on connect emule automatically uses first its nodes.dat or, if there i no or doesn't work, then tries to connect/bootstrap from other known clients (e.g. sources).
Anyway, in most cases it should work by just clicking on connect.

The "Connect" button and "Bootstrap" with the "From known clients" options selected do excactly the same. The easiest way to connect to kad if not connected to a server already (and downloading or uploading stuff) is to click on a nodes.dat link, like the one on nodes-dat.com . You dont need to click any button then ;)

Thank you both! I already was connected with Kad, but i thought there would be better nodes.dat files, just as there are better serverlists (better=safer).

Thanx, again!

i cant get KAD to connect. I had problems 3 days now--orignally i had .48a and it worked till 3 days ago at which tmee i had all dead servers--i followed the directions and was able to get back in for 1 day and then dead again.

Now i deleted .48a and updated to .49a and cannot get any KAD to connect--only getting ed2k to connect

where can I get a walk-thru on ensuring Kad's up and running? Ive got ed2k listed as connected but kad status is firewalled. I assume that is a bad thing.

thanks. I'm still firewalled though. I've disabled windows and mcafee firewall and have full acces for "emule" under program permissions of mafee. I run on comcast and have pg. anything else that could be blocking?

Theoretically you can use everyone's nodes.dat. So, if you can't get a connection you could as well ask a friend (who uses Kad) for the file (or even easier, just type his IP and UDP Port if he isn't firewalled).

@Cornholio & tucanapd: It gets a bit confusing to deal with your (different) problems all in this same thread. Would be easier if you both open your own threads and describe your problems there more detailed. :)
