I have Emule 0.48a with Windows Vista on my computer. When I do a search, even for a very common string, it returns very little. My wife has Windows XP, and the same search returns hundreds of items. Further, my computer reports some ridiculously large number of users online (25M) while hers reports a probably more accurate 4M.

What do I need to tweak to make emule work properly?

Also, if I can't get the links through a search, are there web sites that post emule links?

Thanks,
Quantum

See my signature regarding fake servers, and also the link on how to remove them.

You may also want to ask your wife why she didn't tell you about this, assuming she already knows the information in those links ;)

Thanks. It looks like I am logging on to real servers. Also, others seem to have no problem downloading from ME.

Does your mule still say there are 25 million users connected to the network? I ask because the root of this inflated value is due to fake servers present in your list of servers reporting more users connected to the network than there actually are. It is not a question of just being connected to fake servers. Simply having them in your list will negatively affect all server search functions, and will likely cause your mule to eventually connect to one that will effectively end your file sharing experience until you connect to a good one.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I followed the steps in your email about removing fake servers and using peerates, and it seemed to help -- some. I am now connected to DonkeyServer No1 through peerates, and searches are producing more items. But still "19.7M users" reported. There are 131 servers listed (below). Are any fakes?

If you have so many servers you haven't applied step 3, 5 or 6 of Dick Manitoba's guide.

Cheers :D

You are right -- what I had not done is turn off and restart emule after doing all this. Now I only show the 58 servers below, through peerates; I show a reasonable 4.6M users, and searches seem to be sufficiently numerous! THANKS DICK ET AL!

Next search question: Can you search for more than one item at a time? When I start a second search it stops the first one.

You do not have to shut down and restart eMule in order to remove fake servers and prevent them from returning. As long as you followed and carried out the first ten steps in the instructions I provide, you can keep eMule running . I only mention restarting eMule if you want to test to insure you have removed any and all servers from the static list. If you are positive that no server is set as static, there is no need to restart.

No. Only one search can be carried out at a time. With thousands, or hundreds of thousands of users connected to a server, most servers have a difficult enough time dealing with single search requests, indexing files from new mules connecting, etc. To make the most from your searching, you should carefully consider what words you type into the search window rather than being too general or careless with words, and discovering your search results fail to isolate what you are looking for.

@ quantum1
Still you've some FKS on your serverlist. (62.xx. / 64.xx / 66.xx)
Use the Torpon's link to identify the fakes ones.

Does that mean that even peerates has fake servers in it?

Related question: I still get search returns that report, say, 5,876 sources, all with 100% availability. Does that mean I am connected to a fake server, or only that a fake server is in my list?

Answer to last question depends on type of searching (Server or Global).
Peerates gives you less than 58 servers. Did you follow all steps in the guides from Dick Manitoba or myself?

Cheers :D

Honestly, Quantum. Think for yourself what it would be like if ElChele, Torpon, myself, and anyone in this thread asked you to look at all those numbers, every time we asked you to ;) This is something you must verify personally, sorting the servers by their IP number in numerical order, lowest to highest, and then comparing them to the list maintained by ElChele here. If any server IP in your list of servers matches one in the list, then you have fakes.

The reason you need to learn to verify yourself is obvious. Should you upgrade to a freshly installed eMule, you will of course need to go through those steps again, and verify again, and, because you want to be sure yourself. (We can make mistakes :P ).

Oh, I don't expect anyone to check the servers one by one for me! I was simply wondering why, given I followed all the steps (and improved search performance beyond measure), I am still, apparently, getting SOME fake servers. Is this a rapidly moving target?

It is a rapidly moving target if your machine accepts referred server info from clients or servers. But since you've stopped that behaviour in eMule by doing the steps, your list of servers will remain relatively static. A server may fall off the list if it goes offline for any lengthy period of time.

There are some servers which people dislike, or which they do not trust, and the gruk list contains a couple of them, such as the ifreesex server. Personally, i use the gruk list, and have had no troubles with its list of servers, and until it does cause me trouble, I include the gruk list in my tips.

You of course can remove any of those that appear in ElChele's list or just use the peerates list if you find gruk troubling. I don't :)
