Ok guys, lets just say how safe emule (by itself) if you like downloading say a few songs there and there and the occasional porn movie. You don't download programs or anything. By safe I mean not being caught and sued by the owners of the copyright.

I will add more complexity.
We have have seen lots of times that a file can be renamed with a name that has nothing to do with the real content. What if I am downloading copyrighted files with names changed? I searched for some open source software but after download I find that it was a movie (copy-rite included). How guilty I am if was unaware? :angelnot: What if I rename all my downloads so I can state that I searched and downloaded (to my knowledge) legal material?
It will depend on the jurisprudence from country to country, from state to state.

Bye :flowers:

A different filename means nothing... the content is important.
Usually not knowing that something is wrong does not save you. Are there countries where that's different?

Yeah! Good idea! Pehaps someone has a name we could agreed upon? It would make searches much easier!

:ranting: What kind of advice is this??

Hi everyone
....And don't forguet the file hash, it doesn't change.
Change file name isn't the solution, it's perhaps a short cut, but not always the short cuts, are the way most sure.

I am not advicing anything. It was just a devil's advocate hypothesis. :respect: I don't even do it myself in my own computer.

My point is that if you have something to hide, that's all you can do. A crime is still a crime, even if justice has no tools to punish you. I wanted to highlight a grey legal zone were 1) you can have good (or not bad) intentions and do something illegal (called preterintentional in some cases) and 2) those consciously commiting a crime and hiding it after an "I didn't knew it was illegal". The question was "how safe is eMule?", my answer "is very hard to know".

I'm not fostering the download/upload of copy restricted material.
If someone wants something for free, "try to do it yourself and you'll see how costly is free"

You guys are probably a lot more advanced than I am. “How safe is eMule?” My situation is as follows. A guy in France has a rare piece of video that I want and I am in the U.S. He said he got it on eMule. In the past I have not touched anything like Bittorrent or eMule (in part because I heard of quite some bad stories about Bittorrent). I know if I download something from the Internet, I will need to scan virus/spy-ware first before opening it, that way most likely my PC will be safe. Are there other things that I need to be concerned about eMule other than scanning virus/spy-ware (knowing Bittorrent is “dangerous”)? Is installing eMule itself a big risk?

If you can trust him then there is no danger.

There are no known venerabilities, and there haven't been any for a long time. The installing it self don't do anything ugly, and emule can be easily uninstalled, so it's safe. (though there might be a bit of configuration)

The safer alternative to anti virus is not to open any files that you are not sure of. It's hard, but that's life on windows.

Thank you so very much, cafebean!
I corresponded with the guy only twice on Youtube, not familiar with him. So, if I run the anti-virus/anti-spyware on the file I downloaded from him, then uninstall eMule, my PC is pretty safe, right?
(I also wonder about the need of uninstalling the eMule. Is eMule a process running in the background so that a hacker can exploit your PC if he has your IP address?)

Cafebean said that uninstalling emule is very easy, in fact the only entry in register is about elinks asociated to eMule. You do not need uninstall eMule.

Cheers :D
