I was wondering if we could have a feature where we can give a file a virtual name under which it is indexed on servers and on Kad. Let's say I have this music and I personally just need track number and title on the file because my directory structure is already /artist/album/music files. On the other hand if I want to share this music it would be nice to have the artist's name on each file. So instead of renaming the file in a way that I personally don't need on my HDD I just give it a virtual name in eMule.

This is just an example. I bet there are a ton of files that contain a lot of information on the filename that most people wouldn't retain for themselves if they didn't have to.

Methinks this would require some sort of intelligent mass-rename, 'cause renaming them individually would be a real PITA. Regex?

True. Morph has a mass renaming feature tho I am not sure how intelligent that is. Foobar2000 has a nice mass renaming feature. Regardless of the virtual names mass renaming is a great feature. For music files I personally use Foobar's system because it's so very convenient for music files. You just tell it that you want your files named nn - title and voila that's what you get. If you want number/artist/title then you just make it nn - artist - title and that's it. Foobar just takes the information from the ID3 tags. This obviously is only helpful for music files.

Oh another advantage of the virtual names that I didn't think about is that if you just hide the column nobody else would know what you are sharing. All these people who are so embarrassed that their partners might notice what they download could just rename the file locally and share it under the real name. Might also lessen the amount of mislabelled files tho I doubt that a bit.

Just to be clear, "virtual names" would be for your own shared files, not for files you are downloading, right ?

Why would you limit the virtual names to shared files? Well of couse a downloading file doesn't have a real name yet but you could still use a virtual name and a real name. The real name would be the name the file ends up with while the virtual name is the one that it is and will be shared under.

Looks like someone isn't searching the forum for similar Feature Requests! Luckily, no one with a lot of posts and a high and mighty tone is around to remind the original poster of this ;) :D

I still see a difference. Especially since I want the system not only for shared files but also for downloading files. Real names for downloading files obviously don't mean much before the part file is moved and renamed but you can already set the future real name before the download has finished.
