eMule versions 0.46a and up
There can be two reasons for this. Either you have enabled email notifications in eMule's Settings -> Notifications -> Email Notifications and checked one of these options: 'Download finished' or 'Urgent: Out of discspace, server connection lost'. If this is not the case the advice below for eMule versions prior 0.46a applies to your case.

eMule versions prior to 0.46a
First of all eMule does not send any e-mail and never will for versions prior to 0.46a!

What is the problem?
The problem is ZoneAlarm Firewall. Some users make eMule use other ports than the default ones. If a user makes eMule use a port often used for e-mail traffic (eg. 23) ZoneAlarm thinks that since there is traffic on this port it must be e-mails without the traffic being e-mails.

What shall I do about it?
You have two choices for resolving this problem. Choose the one you prefer:
  • Without being afraid of what might happen you can answer yes to ZoneAlarm (remember to also check "Remember this answer the next time I use this program") and you will not loose connection to the users who uses these non default ports.

  • You can install another firewall than ZoneAlarm. Many people use Kerio Personal Firewall or Sygate Personal Firewall but try searching the forum for some of the many topics on firewalls.
Credits for the information goes to Epominondas and members who posted on the old sticky in the support forum!

Hello,

Emule is trying to send emails on my PC. Both of the reasons given in this thread are not relevant to me. I have Mcafee Security Centre, windows firewall.

I do not have any of the notification features checked and I dont use zone alarm.

Is there any other reason this might be happening.

I am not a user of McAfee products myself (except SiteAdvisor) however I still bet my money on the fact that your eMule is attempting to contact someone who uses email ports as their eMule ports (for whatever reason), and your firewall or such takes this as an attempt to send email.

Either that or you have malware. Scan your computer with anti-virus and with some anti-spyware.

I have done several scans with different software. Nothing has been detected so I guess that you are right.

Is it advisable to block these attempts anyway.

That would likely block eMule from contacting these people who use email ports. I do not see any reason for you to do that.

I'm getting this with ZoneAlarm and it is not because of the send email notification option as stated in the first post of the thread. I will assume the later explanation that wasn't incorporated into the main post is correct, even though it appears to be unverified.

There is a post in the Bin currently, where the user became angry in response to some assumptions/patronizing answers by other users, "Did you read the first post" & "*Sigh*" type posts, that gave no relevant input. Since the first post doesn't account for the above situation where the send email notification box remains unchecked, it was unreasonable to send his post to The Bin by the moderator (one of the repliers), since the language of the responses were provocative and unhelpful.

What part of this do you fail to understand?

The problem is ZoneAlarm Firewall. Some users make eMule use other ports than the default ones. If a user makes eMule use a port often used for e-mail traffic (eg. 23) ZoneAlarm thinks that since there is traffic on this port it must be e-mails without the traffic being e-mails.
It's as straighforward as can be explained. If people have reading comprehension problems, that's not our fault. <_< Furthermore, I don't see any of these people complaining about eMule sending emails monitoring the actual packets generated on that port to verify that the traffic is indeed email. They just naïvely swallow whatever BS their retarded firewall feeds them. Unbelievable!

I would like to have one more clarification.
It's clear to me that eMule is not trying to send e-mail or to use IRC without my consensus even if VirusScan 8.5 is blocking some connections because it thinks that they are for e-mail or IRC (but they aren't).
The quesiton is: are these connections for file upload, download, both, or what else?

However I suggest to insert in the config guide a recommendation of not to use standard e-mail/IRC ports because some very common firewall/antivirus blocks them by default so who uses these ports will have problem in connecting to other peers even if who uses these ports has no firewall or antivirus (the block could be on the other side of the connection).

Thank you.

They are for outgoing connections to peers. Outgoing connections can be used for file reasks, uploads and downloads. Incoming connections are used for the same. If you have a lowid you have no incoming connections.

As for the guide, this should be in the guide of the the firewall. eMule by default is choosing randoms ports > 4096 anyway. Giving too much guides will drown users.

Excuse me, what are file reasks? I haven't found a definition on Google and nor an Italian translation of "reasks".

Thank you.

With reasks i intended to say all meta data that is exchanged between clients. e.g. What files do you have. What queue position does that file(s) have. Telling the peer what chunks of the file you want and is available. Exchanging of the MD4 hashset. eMule can use TCP for all data it exchanges with peers. The only exception on this rule is KAD traffic that is UDP only.

All peers that you want to download something from are contacted every 29 minutes to reask the queue position and inform the peer you were not destroyed by a pissed of Klingon war ship.
