change the default emule collection suffix (extension) from ".emulecollection" to ".ed2k"

possible results:
1. promotes other ed2k clients to adopt the collection format
2. releasers have a single file format to release to. Even though the file could be named "filename.*", such as "filename.txt", it would be simpler if everyone, newbies or experts, knows it as "filename.ed2k" rather then "filename.emulecollection", "filename.amulecollection", "filename.edonkeycollection" ...
3. all the experts here smirks and trashes this newbie for being such a simpleton. :hammer2:

ed2k Stands for edonkey2000. Do you want emule to promote edonkey2000? :argue:

.collection would be just fine.

Nah, I don't think so. I think aMule will use .emulecollection :P

Since it's still eD2k link, I believe ed2kcollection is appropriate.

Why not just call it plain .collection? That way everybody can use it without feeling offended.

The file can contain one or more ed2k links, and is intended for the ed2k network, so I'd say ".ed2k" would be a nice extension for it. And it looks a whole lot better than *anything* with more than 3 or 4 characters.

You are discussing this as if it's actually going to be changed. :)

I somehow doubt it will. :P

If discussions were bound to the probability of them getting realised this forum would be alot less cluttered.

Hey, you have CVS access, don't you?

No, it'd be empty. When was the last time a feature request was addressed by the devs? Even a code snippet, for that matter?
I doubt they even visit this forum section.

Hm as far as I can see all or at least most features that make it into a new release have been requested here.

We must be reading different changelogs then, because I haven't seen that many entries matching posts made here.

We do, alone for the reason to make sure that posters who use every second post to bash us don't take over - unfortunatly a very tough job, since such poster seem to have way more time to produce posts than we can spend.

About the topic: No its not going to be changed, even if there might have been better choices, it's not worth breaking it just for the name.

Could you elaborate on how an extension change would "break" it?

Either by keeping the old name, which would be nonsense to have both, or by killing the old one, which will render all those done before unuseful (need to rename), and will also make that feature not backwards compatible.

Heheheh... my first code snippet proposal entered directly the official code :-k

A matter of code quality?

Why is the name of already existing one of consequence to eMule? Once created, it's just a file, mostly. Besides, renaming them would be very simple.

On December 18 Some Support came from the Ivory Tower to enlighten us about the issue of changing the file extension .emulecollection (see View Post).

As far I know (and I hope the following does not show a complete ignorance in computing technology) an extension is by large only an information tag to give the computer a hint of how to handle a given file. (That's why you can get a bunch of files created on a Mac with no extensions at all and you have either to add them manually or you open them from within the appropriate program.) So changing an extension (like to .ed2k which indeed makes more sense, is simpler and more inviting to third-party programmers) is quite easy (witness the myriads of different extensions you can use for an MPEG video file). All that's necessary is to properly associate the file extension with a program. (Something I had to do for .emulecollection too, even though I had to completely reinstall eMule using an full installation with v0.46a - I think it was version a.)

So what would be the problem? Changing... first the extension of the created collections to .ed2k, second the list of file extensions in the search parameter to include both and third the registry (when installing) to handle both extensions with eMule?

As I said earlier, I hope I haven't shown any real lack of knowledge, yet if I did - enlighten me! :D
